This was taken the next morning after the emerging dragonfly . I got up before the sun and went for a walk, but saw nothing till the sun came over the mountains and light every thing up. I was disparing of finding anything when in a dip in the field edge against some trees was a patch of these pink flowers and fast asleep was this Black-veined White Aporia crataegi which is another 1st for me as it is now extinct in the UK, even though its favourite food plants Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) and Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) are both very common there.
The wings seen against the light are almost see through, though this is with the light against the dark of the woodland edge.
It has a flight season from May to July, both sexes look fairly similar the female is possibly a little smaller as you will see later when I post a mating pair I found in a railway siding on the side of the R. Rhine.
This one as I say was fast asleep and covered in dew and allowed me to move several flowers that were blocking a better view, this was of course after I had very excitedly taken some very very blurred ones, then some better ones, I then realised it was not going to vanish on me I got brave and moved a branch of flowers away and got this and several more with various DOF settings, over 30 images of this one in total. A great find for me and the sort of find I hoped to make when here in Switzerland.

Ps anybody know what the pink flower is? it features in several other images I have.

Hello Robert, very nice close-up of this beautiful butterfly. Great details, colours and Dof. Excellent composition with the unknown flower :)
Well done.

Hey Rob,
From the pic you can almost feel how soft the wings are. Very nice. Amazing how you caught the detail of the veins, even though the light wasn't exactly on your side.

Beautiful, well done! (no idea about the flower .. sorry!)

Hi Robert, what a super shot of the sleeping b'fly. Wonderful sharpness and details, I can even see the dew on the wings, making it look very beautiful and exquisite. And you have another insect in the BG too. Well done.

Hello Rob,

It's great to see you posting whilst being in der Schweiz. :) This is a wonderful butterfly. Excellent details, great POV and marvelous colors. I have no idea what the pink flower is. If you don't know, who will?? ;) Enjoy the rest of your holiday. TFS!

Hi Rob, lovely shot :). I think gaussian blur or NeatImage might help with a slightly noisy BG but everything else is perfect - colours, composition, exposure, detail and sharpness are all spot on. Beautiful, TFS :)

PS Didn't know there was a black veined white until I read your post...I assumed it was a green veined white. This makes it all the more special and I'm glad your early morning walk paid off so handsomely. Very well done :)

Robert, a beauty. There seems to be some noise on the bg; anyway, a minor nit.

Excellent colors and contrast. Composition is perfect.

If I'm not mistaken, there seems to be another insect, on the bottom, on the bg, on the left. It seems to be an insect, but I'm not sure, for the bg is (properly) oof.

Beautiful & interesting composition for this superb butterfly ! Good colors, DOF and details ! TFS Robert.

Great macro shot Robert, great sharpness, details and clarity, nice DOF too! Thanks for sharing

I always wondered how you got such clear beautiful photos of butterflies, I'm sure they all don't cooperate as well as this one and nap for you. Very lovely, the delicate pink flower is a wonderful backdrop for these delicate wings. Very nice.

Hello Robert!
Personal assessment of the photo: excellent.
Very strong visual impact.
Aptness of the photo for the site: excellent.
Personal assessment of the note: more than complete.
Thank you very much for sharing.
