[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Between the rainshowers I photographed this bird.
The African Openbill, anastomus lamelligerus, is 81-94 cm.

A rather small, all dark stork with an ivory-horn bill which has a diagnostic wide, nutcracker-like gap between the mandibles. Adult has glossy sheen to plumage. Juvenile is duller and browner, white pale feather tips; fledges without noticeable bill gap, but this soon develops.

Habitat:
Freshwater lakes and dams, where it feeds mostly on snails and mussels.

Status:
Locally common intra-African migrant; breeds mostly South of the equator.

Voice:
Seldom heard; croaking ‘honk’.

Source: ‘Birds of Africa, South of the Sahara’ by Ian Sinclair and Peter Ryan.

While a good lesson in yet another aviary of which I had not heard, I can say that more than likely you did things all correctly with the photo and inconsistency in image even if slight can come from that particular lens. I had one. All things changed when I went to the Sigma and same price...then I learned the APO was the best for same focal range and cost though was 4x the money I paid for other...This particular Nikon does not feature an internal focus design as I recollect...

Beyond that it is still quite the good lesson plan Peter..

Hello Peter,
A great capture of an African Openbill clearly seen against the natural vegetation with good sharpness and lighting. The shape of the bill is well shown. I have only seen the Indian species and this one is new to me: new to TN?
TFS this fine and interesting image,
Best regards,
Ivan

Hi Peter,

And another bird I have not seen before!! You certainly didn't have good luck with the weather - but it could have been worse. A wonderful view of the Openbill's open bill. He looks like he is smiling. His feather's look iridescent. It's nice to meet him in his natural habitat.

Merhaba Peter,
Daha önce bu kuşu hiç görmedim. Yağmurlu ve kotu ışık koşulları altında çekmiş olmanıza karşın detayları oldukça başarılı bir kare sunmuşsunuz. Emeğinize sağlık.

Hello Peter !
Great capture of a bird which I had never seen before ! He has a strange big beak. I also like the composition, the POV, the natural colors and the pose if the bird, he looks quite proud. It is nice, too, to see the bird in its natural environment, lost in the middle of water and high grasses. Very well done !

weer een vogelsoort op je lijstje.
Mooie opname en gezichtsveld op deze openbill.
Jammer dat hij niet wat lekkers in zijn snavel heeft maar ook deze mag er weer zijn.Ik zoek het wat dichter bij huis!

Hi Peter,
Is the first time I can see this bird species, and I like to learn about new species. Maybe light conditions not helps you very much with sharpness, but´s a good and interesting image, special for identification.
