Verdin the sapsucker! this is my title, today I observed
a very interesting behavior. A flock of about 5 Verdin (Auriparus flaviceps) were going nuts over the sap flowing from this Mesquite Tree, they were making the cuts themselves as you can see here... Enjoy!

Verdins are insectivorous, continuously foraging among the desert trees and scrubs. They are usually solitary except when they pair up to construct their conspicuous nests. Verdins occasionally try to obtain tidbits of dried sugar water from hummingbird feeders.

Hi Everton,

I didn't know the tiny Verdins did this! A wonderful shot capturing him busy at work. Nice colors and details of the bird. Amazing that you saw five of them at one time - I have never seen more than one at a time.

Hello Everton,
Though we have seen the Verdin several times on TN, we have never seen this type of behaviour before!
Excellent capture of a Verdin taking the sap of a Mesquite by making a little groove with its beak. A similar groove made previouly is also well seen. The pose, sharpness, POV and composition are all excellent.
A superb short showing the behaviour of a normally insectiverous bird.
Well done Everton and thanks for deligting us with this!

Hello Everton,
What an interesting capture showing how the Verdin has scratched the surface of the bark to get at the sap. A very well-timed and sharp capture showing this pretty bird. Lovely colours too and well composed.
TFS and regards, Ulla

Hi Everton.
What a unique and nice picture. Even without bird picture would be seen perfectly. However, with bird the shot is the most impressive. Amazing timing and wonderful sharpness/details of the bird and branch. Lights and shadows are fine too. Well done and TFS.

Great capture Everton,
Love the composition and detail in this wonderful shot. Very interesting image as we see the tiny bird finding a sweet treat.
We can even see where other birds have also gotten their drinks in the past, by the healed over scar in the upper left hand corner of the bark. Well done!!!
