[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
In South Africa we have both the White and Black Rhino's. When there are calfs around the calf will (usually) walk in front of the parent if it is a White Rhino and when it is the Black Rhino the calf will follow the parent. This youngster did not just lead the way, but he was like a typical young child - running all over. Here is some more info on these rather large animals:

Southern white rhino

Characteristics: The largest of all rhinoceros species, the southern white rhino weighs around 3500kg. They are distinguished by a large shoulder hump and squared lip. Rhinos have thick gray skin which forms inflexible plates over the shoulders, haunches, sides, forehead and cheeks. Rhinos are surprisingly agile, despite their bulky appearance. Their long, heavy head is carried close to the ground. Rhinos have poor eyesight and depend heavily upon their hearing and sense of smell.

Diet: Unlike other rhino species, white rhinoceros are exclusively grazers. Other rhinos are browsers that feed on trees, branches and shrubs. White rhinos possess squared lips that allow them to feed on short grasses.

Reproduction: Females typically give birth to one calf that weighs around 85kgs. Calves stay with their mothers for 2-3 years.

Environmental Connections: Thanks to successful conservation strategies, the southern white rhinoceros population is improving in the wild. Unfortunately other species such as the black rhino and the northern white rhino population are in severe danger of extinction.

Japie
I saw them today, but too far away. This is a nice shot, showing the behaviour of these animals. The reason the clalf walks in front is because the veld is open. The Black rhino lives in dense(r) bush, so mom walks in front to make a way for baby to follow!

Nice picture of the family on a picnic. Colours, and composition are spot on - very pleasent to look at.

Very nice large mammal shot beautifully seen, notes good too.
nice one Callie for the explination simple really, just nice to see in action like this.

Japie,
I like the earthy tones of this photo. The moment is striking and the DOF very good. Great shot. I see a lot of good photo's from Krugersdorp and will have to visit there soon. Very nice detailed note. Thanx for sharing.

Nice one Japie,
Good composition, good note, It's only a shame that the litle rino had his head down.
Very good jop Japie.

Great capture, Japie, in which the earthy tones are very nice, and the details of adult and "junior" rhino make for a fun comparison. Good note and a fun title, well done.

In love whit this one. Like i say in french
Maudit qu'elle est belle
You touch my heart.

One horn rhinos live in nepal..... I love them, so tough looking! Great shot!

A fantastic compostion. The graduation of large to small is a great and creative repeating pattern. The rhino is bulky but elegant as it moves in this photo. Well done.

Japie, the colors are in tune and they are vivid. Great job. I also like your sense of humor - no matter if it's on the photos themselves, on the notes or on the titles you give the photos.

Congratulations.

Lvio
