Dear Friends
Today I present to you a very common butterfly -The Plain Tiger.
But the title has more to do with snippets of belief i found that people hold regarding butterflies.Since this is a common species here on TN I decided to skip the usual note. However i must add that this is one photograph close to my heart, for this was the day i realised the garden near my new home attracts lots of butterflies.I was so excited on the first day that I forgot to turn down the EV and you can see the result. It was after i returned home i realised i almost burnt the lantanas in the process!Nevertheless i decided to post this beauty because i got a perfect BG and the butterfly despite its tattered looks displayed lot of energy and enthusiasm as it flitted about the shrubs.

And now to some interesting beliefs on butterflies:

-Native Americans embroidered butterflies onto their children's caps to bring sweet dreams.

-For the Papago Tribe of North America, for a wish to come true, there has to be a butterfly release. They must first capture a butterfly and whisper that wish to it. Since a butterfly can make no sound, the butterfly can not reveal the wish to anyone but the Great Spirit who hears and sees all. In gratitude for giving the beautiful butterfly its freedom, the Great Spirit always grants the wish. So, according to legend, by making a wish and giving the butterfly its freedom, the wish will be taken to the heavens and be granted.

-Mayans in Guatemala speak of simultaneous Twin Realities: the world of dreams and the world of work. These worlds are likened to the opposing wings of a Butterfly: the dream world is one wing, and the awake world is the other. They believe the wings must connect at the Heart for the Butterfly to fly and live. Real life occurs because of the interaction of the wings. The Life is the Butterfly's Heart. Life, like the Butterfly's Heart, is kept alive by the two opposing, mirroring twinlike wings.

Hallo Silpa
I have also been planting lots of flowers lately to attract more insects to the garden, and I cannot wait for them to start to blossom. Your image is colourful and very pleasant to look at. The “damaged wing” of the butterfly is a pity but it is never the less a beautiful insect with an arrangement of lovely autumn colours in the wings. The yellowish flower it is resting on, is pleasant and soft on the eye and your background is most favourable. Thanks for the interesting notes that accompanied you’re posting. May your garden still attract many beautiful and interesting insects.
Best regards
Anna

Hi Iris,
this shot is very good and the BG realy wonderful. I like the colours so much, so sunny, so warm - that's good in our cold days here in Germany, thanks

Hi Silpa,

Common or not, this is a beautiful Plain Tiger. Lovely position on the lantana showing off the worn but still gorgeous markings. Colors are excellent and there is a fine clarity to this shot. Background and composition are superb.

Hello Iris

A striking image of this Plain Tiger,it is anything but plain as it is a beauty.
Excellent DOF with a wonderful BG with lovely bokeh.
The details are sharp and well focused.
Excellent light and rich colours.
I often think a tattered butterfly represents an interesting way of looking at beauty. The butterfly is no longer what it formerly was ,for it's aesthetic beauty has faded, but the gracefulness of it's flight remains. There is hope for us as we age because outward beauty is just skin deep.Inner beauty can survive the ravishes of time.

Merhaba Silpa,
Unfortunately my English is very bad and I can't write long and complex sentences. I hope you understand me. First thank you very much for all critiques. I'm very glad you like my photos. This is very nice macro shot. Colors are very nice, DOF is very good. Background is very clear. Thanks for sharing. Best regards...

Hi Silpa,
I'm uncomfortable with low (or high?) camera settings -- especially the shutter speed. Maybe each camera has a personality of its own. I have tried Goutham's aperture value 8 formula several times but with disasterous results. Your aperture value makes me queasy, but when I look at the result, I am thrilled at a sharp and fully balanced image.
Even though the veteran in your picture has lost a bit of its wing, it looks truly majestic on that lantana flower.
The other day at Okhla embankment, a fit and healthy Plain Tiger crossed my path. I ignored it because I was trying to shoot some Purple Moorhens down there in the swamps. Still, it made me think of this valiant butterfly impervious of cold weather.
Thanks and regards.
Ram

Hi Iris,

What a stunner, the colours on this really do stand out, from the pale colours of the flower to the stunning colours and markings on the wings of this beautiful butterfly, yes the wing might be a bit damaged but this is nature and I think it adds to the composition, loverly work.

t.f.s Rick :)

Hello Silpa,
Very fine and harmonious shot, well composed and with subtle colors. I like the busy attitude of the Plain Tiger, it makes the picture interesting, almost funny. Thanks also for the note. I notice that butterfly are always in connection with poetical thoughts.
Thanks also for your kind visit to my pictures.
Take care

Hello Silpa !
What a gorgeous picture - you may say he is common in your country, and he is indeed quite common on TN, but here in France we never have the opportunity to see it so it's always nice to have picture, specially when the pictures are as excellent as this one. Light, colors, composition, pose of the butterfly, BG and POV, everything is simply wonderful, and there is also some kind of softness on this picture, makes it look sweet and lovely, very pleasant to look at. Very well done !
Valerie.

I've never seen any Lantana here in Delhi, Silpa. But this plain tiger surely seems to have found it.This is a superb shot.Very well seen, captured and presented.
Cheers!
Goldy

Silpa, your lighting here is just beautiful!

Hi Silpa.
I like that you are surrounded with such wonderful butterflies. Despite you write that this is common species I have never met it in our places. And I like to watch so fine shot which represents this beauty at impressive POV perfectly. Colouration and shapes of the butterfly are reflected excellently. Pictured scene at whole is very nice and BG is simply amazing. My kind wishes and TFS.
