Southern Yellow-Billed Hornbill / Tockus leucomelas

Today's posting I would like to dedicate to my husband Loot. He is currently snowed under with work from a very important project and is working towards a deadline. Currently he has no time for relaxation or photography, this being the reason he is so scarce on the site nowadays. I want to repeat what I said in my very first posting, which I dedicated to him: Loot showed me how to love all of creation and everything involved with nature. He taught me about the different animals, birds, insects, fishes, flowers, trees, and much more. This list can go on and on. He is a great tutor. I am sure many of you have learned to know him that way. I miss his presence on the site, as I am certain you do too.

I am sure the most of you has seen this bird with its strange, but rather interesting characteristics on the gallery many times. Watching these birds interacting and going about doing their usual daily activities such as foraging or pecking at food morsels and chasing one another around normally present a humorous and most relaxing time. They sometimes come out with comical antics and performances much to the delight of the tourists. We stopped at the Afsaal picnic spot for refreshments and were welcomed by a host of these birds. They are so tame that they would come and sit right next to the car to beg for food in their very unique big-eyed way. This guy came so close I could not let the opportunity go by capturing a full frontal view of its face. Due to it being so close to the camera the detail of its long curled beak is not very obvious. Now I ask you, "Do this bird have beautiful eyelashes or not?

General Overview
Of all the Southern African hornbills, the Southern Yellow-billed is probably the most familiar because it is so common in game reserves, from the Kruger National Park to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and Etosha National Park in Namibia. It is very similar to the Red-billed hornbill, with which it often associates, foraging on the ground where it runs about on its short legs like a wind-up toy.

This bird digs far less than its red-billed cousin, preferring to pick up its food from the surface of the soil. It also chases and swoops upon moving prey. In the dry season it likes to eat ants and termites, and in the wet season it feeds more on other insects, as well as on centipedes, scorpions and seeds.

In a territory of about 17ha, a pair of Yellow-billed hornbills seeks out a suitable tree in which to nest. They line the floor with dry grass, leaves and bark, and the female seals herself into the hole. After laying her 3-5 white, pitted eggs, the female incubates them for about 25 days. About 3 weeks later, she breaks her way out of the nest and helps the male feed the young. The young reseal the nest themselves and break out at the age of about 45 days when they are able to fly.

Taken from: Animals of the Kruger Park and Lowveld - Heritage Publishing.

I hope you enjoyed looking at this photo as much as I took pleasure in taking it.

Hello Anna,
A great close-up of a Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill, showing the head from a frontal POV with excellent sharpness and focusing. Amazing that you could get so close to a wild bird to take such a shot. Not exactly a beauty, but one can see the large eyes and eyelashes with fine clarity.
Nice tribute to your husband: I hope Loot doen't work too hard and can soon take rest and do what he enjoys doing, incuding some photography.
Thanks for sharing this charmer,
Best wishes,
Ivan

Hi Anna,
this bird is absolute wonderful and I love to see this one from the front - that's a lovely effect with the nice beak and look at these eyelashes - beautiful even without mascara ;-)
That's the shot of the day, I like it so much, thanks and greetings to you both

Can someone pass me the mascara please!:)
Hi Anna,
Somtimes it is the perspective that matters....the bill can be forgotten for a while, and those lovely looking eye-lashes can be admired...i wonder how beautiful would they look if they fluttered at you time and again....and I bet before you realise they would have managed to have all the food in your hand..
I like the intimate style of this portrait that captures the eye of this beautiful bird in fine sharpnes. The gaze is pointed and sharp boring right into you.The highlighted features of your subject definitely adds to the overal quality of the image that has also used the natural light very well.
It would be such a wonderful thing to see hornbills in such close proximity.I wish our Indian Grey hornbills became a little more friendly like yours.
Thanks for another thoughtful presentation from beautiful South Africa.
Cheers
Silpa
P.S:Loot could get a great boost looking at those perky eyelashes-a fine dedication.

Hi Anna,
Give my regards to Loot and I hope that this hard work will give him extra free time after the deadline. But luckely we got Mrs. Eksteen to present us with the nature of South Africa, and I can feel the Loot influence in your photos.
This is almost a photo that has the feel that you might have gotten a bit too close. He looks not really that pretty and it feels that it could have attacked you at any second. The sharp details and colors are amazing.
TFS,
Niek

Hello Anna,
This is amazing close up of this bird. The details, colors & sharpness are superb. I like the finer aspects of the eyes & eyelashes. It is no doubt a grand front profile of Southern Yellow-Billed Hornbill. I appreciate your dedication of this photograph to Loot :) TFS
Regards-Subhash
PS: I hope Loot has some free time to see your wonderful dedication to him!

Ciao Anna,
wonderful close up of this strange bird taken from an excellent frontal POV with amazing details; very vivid colours in a spectacular composition. I love your notes.
TFS. Best regards

Hello Anna,
There is a saying that we often hear when others view a portrait taken, and that is, "A Face Only A Mother Could Love." This bird has the oddest facial features with that huge bill, those long dreamy eye lashes, and those big yellow eyes. I guess if I was a female those would be the aspects I would crone for,
Excellent Capture,
Have A Great Week Ahead...
Steve

Woww!.. Bu ne muhteşem bir surat böyle! Gerçekten karşıdan çekilmiş en güzel kuş portresi olmuş. Detaylar, netlik ve renkler çok başarılı.
Emeğine sağlık.

Today I came to know that Treknature's loving photography teacher "LOOT" is your batter half :-> . Your country South Africa is a great place of Flora and Fauna. Only once I visited your country and only three places... Cape town, Johannesburg and Durban. But I only got chance to visit your country's Political gardens, not the natural gardens for which South Africa should be visited. So your (both Mr. Loot and you) pictures are the oasis for me. as this one. With lots of regards and respect to you and your other half.

Dear Anna,
excellent portrait, the absolute eye-catcher!
A great pleasure to see such a creativy shot.
Well decided to focus on eyes with a wide diaphragm: being OOF, the boldly protruding beak gets really three-dimensional, just as if sticking right into my face, wow!
Wonderful juicy colours, another masterpiece from your factory! Thank you!
