it was the only time i found this butterfly. this shot is far from perfect but he was very shy and i can't go to close. this picture was taken from 2 meters from the subject

Comma
Polygonia c-album (Nymphalis c-album)

Règne Animalia
Embranchement Arthropoda
Classe Insecta
Ordre Lepidoptera
Sous-ordre Ditrysia
Super-famille Papilionoidea
Famille Nymphalidae
Sous-famille Nymphalinae
Genre Polygonia

Distribution: Much of France and eastwards across Central Europe to S Finland, extremely local in N Spain. Sporadic and local across range. Can be common where found, but usually at low density.

Identification: This species and the Southern Comma, P. egea, are distinctive. They have highly scalloped wings, looking like a dead leaf with wings closed. The uppersides are rich orange brown with darker brown spots. The two species are separated:

General:
      - richer darker butterfly, less scalloped wings c-album; paler butterfly, fewer dark markings and more deeply scalloped wings egea.

Upperside (underside too, of course, but not visible from below):
      - inner margin: deeply curved in c-album, small indent in egea.

Underside:
      - white comma on the underside hindwing: rather U-shaped with a small hooks at the ends in the c-album , V-shaped "sans-serif" (no hooks) in egea.
      - underside general mottling: confused and broken up in c-album, striated and parallel in egea.
      - underside with row of green-blue spots in post discal area in c-album, no spots in egea.

Flight time: The first generation emerges around June/ July. There is a partial second generation in August/ September. The butterfly hibernates as an adult, emerging on the first warm days of spring in March or April. For more detail about the remarkable breeding strategy, see additional notes.

Habitat: Woodland and gardens. Larvae feed on various plants such as Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica), Sallows (Salix), Elms (Ulmus) and Currents (Ribes).

Behaviour: Often one of the first butterflies on the wing after hibernation in spring. Hibernates as an adult where its cryptic underside markings and broken wing shape make the butterfly look like a dead leaf. It rests amongst leaves and on tree truncks, possibly also inside outbuildings.

Additional notes: Some adults from the first generation hibernate, as do all the adults from the second generation. Two forms emerge from the first brood - the typical dark brown form and a lighter, brighter form hutchinsoni. It appears that only the hutchinsoni individuals are sexually active, mating quickly and laying to produce the second brood. Non-hutchinsoni individuals go into hibernation immediately. None of the second brood is of form hutchinsoni thus these are not sexually active and they go into hibernation. After winter all the hibernated butterflies, from 1st and 2nd broods, become sexually mature.

There is some evidence that hutchinsoni individuals may be generated if larvae are exposed to lengthening day lengths, and non-hutchinsoni from shortening day lengths. Thus if conditions are good early in the year, more larvae will become sexually active hutchinsoni, generating a larger second brood. The converse of course being equally valid.

Hallo Jacqueline
What a delightful butterfly and absolute feast to the eye. This is really a gorgeous image with lots of detail to appreciate. This butterfly is formed perfectly and the colours are spectacular, especially at the lower part of the wings. It looks as if it was painted by hand and can surely be seen as a piece of art. Maybe not the best in your own opinoun, but a great view for me. Thanks for sharing, and have an enjoyable day.
Best regards
Anna

Hi Jacqueline.
Once more brilliant shot from you. I am impressed with great DOF. Both wonderful specimen of butterfly and wild plant are in focus and their details are excellent. Busy BG is looked perfectly owing the exact level of blurriness. I also like fine sunlight and created by it effect – nice vivid colours of the scene. Kind regards and compliments.

Hello Jaqueline,
This is a very good result for a shot of a Comma butterfly taken at a distance of two meters with a Canon 18-55 mm lens.
Yes it is a little soft, but the details and colours are excellent and the composition on the top of a Nettle (its larval host plant) against an OOF natural BG is pleasing.
Thanks for sharing this one,
Best regards,
Ivan

Hi Jacqueline,
nicely placed subject between the leaves. The ruggedness of the wings is well repeated by the leaves too. how interesting to note.
The light is very helpfl in making the colours and features well seen.
Very sharp and clear shot.

Hi Jacqueline,
Wonderful shot of this beautiful Comma nicely perched on that leaf. Considering the shyness you have done an admirable job here. Very impressive sharpness, colours and details and I like this natural setting. GFreat lighting, POV, DOF and composition.

Hallo Jacqueline,
Sabine - wishnugaruda

Hi Jacqueline.
very nice composition
well done.

Hi Jacueline,

nice presentation of this butterfly.
Good of sharpness, pov and dof.
Beautiful colours.
This one I haven't yet on the picture.

Jacqueline,

I like this shot of the Comma. We have them here in Northern Illinois, USA as well. We also have the Question Mark. They look very much the same, but the Question Mark has a little white dot below the coma on the underside of the wing. You are right, they are very skittish and hard to shoot. With a relatively shot lens I am sure it was even more difficult.

I like the lighting and the focus. I might have cropped the picture a little tighter to eliminate some of the back ground and leaves to put more emphasis on the butterfly. That said, I still thing it is a very good shot.

Bob

Saludos cordiales.
Ferran.

Hi Jacqueline,

I wonder you used 18-55mm from 2m distance and how large you crop the picture, but still good detail and sharp.Nice natural athmosphere and good note.TFS.

Hi Jacqueline,

Very good shot from two meters away. I like the pov of the beautiful perch on the leaves. Well lit image with good display of markings on the wings. Nicely framed and well done.

Jusni

Hello Jacqueline,
You present a fine specimen of the comma butterfly which is more of a European find.We do not have them here and I really envy your luck of finding them and getting the opportunity to capture them in your cameras.

The composition you have here shows a bit of busy BG but still showing off excellent details of the subject. The colours on thi butterfly are indeed a joy to look at and the way you got it with open wings against the greens makes it more delightful.I made an effort at the workshop wondering whether the beauty can be shown off in a slightly more clearer manner.Mind you, this is more for my own learning as msh as i admire and appreciate your work.Hope you like the WS.
Cheers

Merhaba Jacqueline,

Markus
