The Southern Ground-hornbill, Bucorvus leadbeateri or cafer, is one of two species of ground-hornbill and is the largest species of hornbill. It is a large bird, at 90 to 129 cm (36 to 51 in) long and a weight of 2.2 to 6.2 kg (4.8 to 13.6 lbs), with the male considerably larger than the female. It is characterized by black coloration and vivid red patches of bare skin on the face and throat (yellow in juvenile birds). The white tips of the wings (primary feathers) seen in flight are another diagnostic characteristic. The beak is black and straight and presents a casque, more developed in males. Female Southern Ground-hornbills are smaller and have violet-blue skin on their throats.

Hello Patrick,
Beautiful photo of this Ground-hornbill with prey. Very sharp an a great POV. Good natural colours and OOF BG.

Superb Ground-hornbill portrait, Patrick.
What is more, you have captured it with a reptile in its mouth.
A technically outstanding image with razor sharp focus and rich colours.
Your images from Africa are a rich collection of assidous work which I intend to look at closely at my own pace.
Thanks and regards.

Hello Patrick,
Looks like a picture postcard of this Ground-hornbill. Very nice pose and colors with a prey. I like the expression in the eye.
Thanks for sharing

Namastay Patrick,
A nice capture of this beautiful hornbill. Excellent sharp details with a lovely composition. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hello Patrick,
Nice post especially in terms of precise moment and content.
I captured a Southern Ground-hornbill in Kruger National Park, South Africa with actually a snake in its bill and not really a small snake. So the bird threw the snake in the air a few times and the snake disappeared into the bird:-)
I don't know whether he did that with the lizard?
Thanks for sharing.

Bonjour Patrick !
Joli BG bien flou, belles couleurs. Félicitations !
