The Mer de Glace (Sea of Ice) is a glacier located on the northern slopes of the Mont Blanc massif, in the Alps. At 7 kilometres long and 200 metres deep, it is the longest glacier in France.
It originates at an elevation of 2,400 metres where it is fed by the confluence of Glacier du Géant, Glacier de Lechaud and Cascade du Talèfre, north of Mont Tacul, and descends to 1,400 metres. It flows north-north-west between Aiguille du Moine on the east and Trélaporte on the west. Le Grand Dru lies to the north east. It was once easily visible from Chamonix, but has been shrinking and is now barely visible from below.

Supurb, I think it is as cold as it looks there. Love alpine terrain, as a younger man I lived in Alaska. Difficult to shoot the dark valley and bright sky beond, you managed it well.

Hi Roges!
Foarte frumoasa imagine din aceasta vale care pare inghetata.
Toate fotografiile tale sunt interesante.

Hi Adrian-

Wonderful image. I know of only a few glacier pictures on TN (my post "merging glaciers", shot from a 747 over Alaska, and one by jamesp). Do you know of more? There must be more than 3. Do you have more images which you can post? Maybe it's time for a glacier theme.

Hi Adrian,

Alsmost the same pov as my picture.
Good composition, for myself I found the colours to blue.
There are a lot changes with this gletscher.
It looks really cold there.

Hello Adrian !
Yes, I visited this place, too - and it was awesome ! So beautiful ! I went during summer, so I didn't have that much snow and ice, and thus your picture looks better than mine. I like the blue and clear sky, the pure white snow (exposure was perfectly managed), the composition, the POV. It is a real pleasure to look at. Very well done !

Hallow Adrian,
What a beautiful but harsh icy land scape.Amazing colouration also the suns rays caught on the tops and a clear blue sky great contrast.Well done my friend,

Hello Adrian! Wonderful landscape, excellent POV and capture. Good sharpness. Good luck!

Hi Adrian

Impressive capture of this gigantic glacier. I understand a lot of these glaciers are
fast disappearing all over the world and you are clearly concerned about this ones
demise. The "Summit on Climate Change" doesn't seem to hold any difference or
promise for the future. Your image show some good colour definition and lovely
sharp details. The composition is great with the glacier leading the eyes into the
image to discover those fabulous mountains and ending at the blue, blue sky.

Well done and TFS.
