Lichen on moss

Lichen: Cladonia sp.
Moss: Hypnum sp

Physical characteristics

Description
Botanically, mosses are bryophytes, or non-vascular plants. They can be distinguished from the apparently similar liverworts (Marchantiophyta or Hepaticae) by their multi-cellular rhizoids. Other differences are not universal for all mosses and all liverworts, but the presence of clearly differentiated "stem" and "leaves", the lack of deeply lobed or segmented leaves, and the absence of leaves arranged in three ranks, all point to the plant being a moss.

In addition to lacking a vascular system, mosses have a gametophyte-dominant life cycle, i.e. the plant's cells are haploid for most of its life cycle. Sporophytes (i.e. the diploid body) are short-lived and dependent on the gametophyte. This is in contrast to the pattern exhibited by most "higher" plants and by most animals. In seed plants, for example, the haploid generation is represented by the pollen and the ovule, whilst the diploid generation is the familiar flowering plant.

Bonjour Jose,
Une image originale et très artistique de cette mousse aux formes très surprenantes. Tu nous montres la mousse comme on ne la perçoit pratiquement pas à l'oeil nu. Et l'image est d'une grand beauté!
Un grand merci
Anne

Hello Jose,

Your close-up of the moss is very good as you have chosen a well adapted DOF. Plants are shown in a clear image so that good details can be observed.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

Hello Jose,
This is a very good shot, but you have something more than moss here.
The two objects protruding from the moss are part of a lichen of the family Cladoniaceae.
It is a very large family, with over 70 species in New Zealand alone.
You can see some similar ones here on Clive Shirleys site 'The Hidden Forest'
Of course, lichens are made up of two organisms,a fungi and either algae or cyanobacteria .... you might need to update your notes ;)
A very good shot indeed though.
Cheers & thanks for sharing.

Hi Jose!

Fantastic photo from microcosmos. Very green and detailed, with perfect composition. Two lichens look like green binoculars or ears of Shrek :-)

Hola Jose Ramon,
Focus, sharpness, color tones, details, lighting, POV, shallow DOF and composition look very nice. Gracias y saludos amigo,

Hy Jose
I know that this lichens are quite small, not very easy to photograph them with a normal lens. I like the picture, in green colors, with great details in the lichens body!
Oana

I could never imagine Lichen could take such an interesting shape and that too growing on Moss, Jose.
This is a brilliant shot with those two identical cylinders of Lichen standing tall. The green ambience is another feature of this picture that makes it so very attractive.
Thanks and regards.

Hi Jose.
Few times I photographed moss too. It is so difficult kind of shooting. First of all you have found an amazing specimen. And then you have created simply terrific shot. I am impressed with applied equipment and final result. Fantastic details and sharpness with huge DOF considering the size of the subject. Lights and colours are wonderful too. Bravo. Great job.
Alexei.

Hallo Jose
How beautiful is this image. Green upon green and so lovely to look at. The textures of the Lichen on the moss is captured with great clarity and detail. Altough the image is 99% green it is very eye-catching and soft on the eye. It does however remind me of Schrek's ears in some way. Thanks for sharing. Best regards. Anna

HiJose Ramon,

Hello Jose,
A very fine macro of these fine Lichens appearing out of the mosses. An excellent composition showing sharp details and fine colours.
TFS and regards, Ulla

Hola Jose Ramon !
What an unusual picture of something we do not see very often on TN ! The shape of these lichens and the green color are amazing, and so beautiful. Sharpness is excellent, details and textures are perfectly reproduced, the vertical composition is splendid, and all the different tones of green are very pleasant to the eye.
Agradecidos y saludos,
Valérie.

Hola José Ramçon,
buenas fiestas para tí también y feliz 2010... lo digo ya que nos cruzamos poco por aquí.
Interesante especie que desconozco a la vez que original en formas y colores.
Un abrazo: Josep Ignasi.
