ZERYNTHIA POLYXENA (Denis&Schiffermüller, 1775)

Southern Festoon
Osterluzeifalter
Diane

Family: Papilonidae
Subfamily: Parnassiinae
Wingspan: 52-56mm
Distribution: Southern Europe, Parts of Asia
Habitat: Dry and sunny places
Foodplant (caterpillar) Aristolochia-species
Flight-time: April-June

This beautiful butterfly is considered as extinct in Switzerland. Some people tried to reintroduce it and it seems that there are some specimen which survived. I was very excited at this sight, it was the first time I saw one. The butterfly is sitting on a bud of a Dianthus carthusianorum flower, which actually flowers in our Botanical Garden.

Hello Anne,
What a catch! I believe this butterfly has the most beautiful coloration and pattern of most of the lepidoptria species we are able to still see these days.
Very strong image with the greatest of detail and choice of depth,
This butterfly must rank with the Apollo that is also registered as extinct here in the States, but I have seen a few still prevalent on Mt. Hood.
Congradulations...
Steve

Bonjour Anne,
You were lucky to see a Z. polyxena in your country. I hope it re-establshes itself again: maybe global warming will encourage this S. european species.
Excellent macro taken from a fine POV to show the closed wings with good sharpness and lighting. Excellent composition with the Dianthus flower buds against a pleasing neutral natural BG.
Merci et bonne soirée,
Amitiés,
Ivan

Hi Anne, how's it going?

Congratulations! From the note I understand that this one is rare overthere. Not only did you spot this one, but also were able to get a clear shot and manage a good composition. It looks beautiful, Anne.

"ZERYNTHIA POLYXENA" ..

Sounds like Greek to me... ;)

:)

Well done, TFS.

Best regards, Dimitri.

Hallo Anne !

Deine Sammlung von Schmetterlingen geht weiter. Ein anderes wunderschöne Muster.
Cristina kommt auch von hinten! Es war ein Witz.
Die Beschreibung ist sehr interessant.
Ein schöner Abend,
Adrian

Ciao Anne, congratulations for this fantastic capture of rare butterfly, great macro with wonderful colors, fine details and superb sharpness, I like a lot, very well done, ciao Silvio

Ciao Anne,
Grazie e complimenti
Con amicizia
Maurizio

Hi Anne, a stunningly great macro capture of this pretty S Festoon b-fly from wonderful lateral POV with fine composition and excellent details.
TFS and cheers,
Bayram

A very beautiful butterfly shot with great expertise and care, Anne.
Very well done.

Brown and green go together well. I think the choice of green for a backdrop was more than likely luck however, at times we all get very lucky. This is one of the times for you. Congratulations on a good image.
Bob

hello Anne
light and background functioned irreproachably, the feathers resemble diaphanous,a very fine composition and photo

Hallo Anne
A beautiful butterfly with dark but striking colours, which displays beautifully against the green background. The patterns and markings on the wings is delightful and reminds me of a Red Indians headgear. I also like the white lined spots on the furry body. A pleasant image. I thank you kindly for sharing. Best regards.
Anna

Liebe Anne,

Saludos: Josep Ignasi.

ciao Anne!
fascinating butterfly caught in a splendid pose .. good details despite the quality of the light is difficult...
well managed... best sERGIO

bonjour Anne

Hi Anne,
Hope you are doing well! I love the back lit wings here. i usually use a white paper in such situations as a reflector to get the light into those shadowy areas.

PS: My trip to Swiss has been postponed for about 6-8 weeks , will keep you updated.

Regards,
Goutham R

Hello Anne,
Great POV here. The detail in this shot is phenomenal as well as similar color of bloom and insect.
Regards,
Greg

Ciao Anne. I like the great DOF and the right POV. Good light management too.

Liebe Anne,
Entschuldige bitte meine lange Funkstille.
Peter
