Species: C. pamphilus

The Small Heath Coenonympha pamphilus is a butterfly species belonging to the family Nymphalidae, (subfamily Satyrinae, commonly known as "the Browns"). It is widespread in Eurasia and northwestern Africa, preferring drier habitats than other Coenonymphae. The larval host plants are grasses, notably Sheep's Fescue. The butterfly loosely resembles a small Meadow Brown, but the brown colour of the wings appears noticeably paler in flight. Unlike the Meadow Brown and other common members of Satyrinae, the Small Heath is a lateral basker, only ever resting with its wings closed and angled at 90° to the sun.
The larvae have lifespans of varying length, even within the same climate, thus the imagines of one generation may be seen over a long period. The butterfly usually has two, occasionally three, broods and is on the wing from mid May until early October (late June to mid August in colder climates). The insect overwinters in its larval stage.

Excellent catch.
Flyers details can be observed very well.
Congratulations!

Hello Roberto,

Italy must be the place for early, beautiful butterflies. I have seen only a couple of cabbage whites this year!

This is a superb close-up. Excellent details of the head and wings, from their colour to their textures.
Very well composed, too.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Roberto.
Blameless in all respects picture. I like fine subject, wonderful colours, excellent framing of the image and great composition. However, the key point of the shot is ultimate and lovely looking details/sharpness. These days I took many shots of the species with 300 mm + 1.4x TC. Unfortunately, I cannot get such nice shots with new equipment. However, our species is very small, about 15 mm. Last year we had large specimens. My congratulations. Well done.
Alexei.

Hello Roberto
amazing shot of this Small Heath, the details are splendid, we can see each hair on his body and the texture of his wings, the colors of the butterfly and the BG are superb, nice pose and POV
Have a nice sunday
