Green Tiger Beetle Cicindela campestris

Swedish name: Sandjägare, meaning ‘sand hunter’

Tiger Beetles (Cicindelidae) are a world-wide family of beetles that are characterised by their tendency to run fast and fly in order to be effective predators of other insects. There are over 2000 species.
They are mostly found on the ground, though some have trees as their habitat. Radomir Jaskula (Cicindela) is the TN specialist of these beetles
There are only 4 species in Sweden, of which this is the most common.

The Green Tiger beetle is the most common species in Europe, the adults appearing in the spring, as early as the middle of April in Sweden when the sun shines. It prefers bare sandy areas surrounded by vegetation. It tends to run and seek, rather than wait and pounce and one usually first sees it when it flies up after being disturbed.
The number of cream-coloured spots on the green wing cases varies between individuals, sometimes being nearly absent.

I caught this pair in the sunlight and had to slightly underexpose to get the right colours. Even so, the colours are iridescent and difficult to get right. The female has lost one antenna.

This was taken with my long lens hand-held at a distance of about 1.8 meters (6 ft). After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was selectively sharpened.

Thanks for viewing and have a nice weekend!

Hi Ivan. A very good close up of the pair of Tiger Beetles. When you see two together its legs every where. Your sharp focusing has given fine detail and natural colours. You must have a very steady hand to take this hand held. I need to use a tripod most of the time now. All with interesting notes well done TFs.
Nick..

Hehehe! What a great timing Ivan! We both presented tiger beetles today! :) But you were much more lucky taking this picture - you have a lovely pair :>
Very good picture and I am really happy to see it! (and I hope to see this species during Scandinavian trip :>)
Sharpness, DOF and clarity is the first class!
Nothing to add, or maybe there is something, I'd like to add this picture to 2 themes: Cicindelidae of Europe and Cicindelidae of the world if you agree :>
All the best from Lodz!
Radomir

Hello Lucky Man!

Great timing and great picture! I envy you! Perfect DOF with both beetles sharp and detailes, with very nice green colour on sandy BG. I like POV also with well visible eyes and details on insects' backs. I didn't saw this specie in nature yet, only their browns relatives :-)

Hi Ivan,

A great capture of this pair ,I made a similair capture last season and I know that they are quite difficult to photograph as in my case they runned all over the ground while mating and never sat sttill, the picture is well exposed and has nice colors and natural sandy BG,
Thanks

Paul

Hi Ivan.
Few days ago I have tried to shoot this beetle with new 300 mm and 1.4x TC. It is very cute set for such subjects, however, I could not get similar quality of the shot. May be some time I will can. Yours are great with stunning details and impressive colours. POV and composition are also excellent. My kind regards and compliments.
Alexei.

Hi Ivan,

This pair is so crystal clear that they are amazing. You did a great job with the iridescent colors too. Fantastic details of both. You captured the moment perfectly.

Jane

1+1= at least two...nice capture at perfect timing..I think I still have much learning to do and hope my body will withstand the rigors I have in mind for it...such as dropping down low instead of my orthopedic advice that I need major surgery...

Hello Ivan,
Knowing how difficult it is to catch only one beetle of this fast species, I congratulate you for the pair, even if the poor female has already lost one of her antennae:-( Excellent sharpness and natural colors. We have the same species on 2000m too.
Have a nice day. I hope not too hot like here. We have already over 30°.
Kind regards
Anne

Amazing capture of this animals. Excellent sharpness on this picture. Well captured.

Hi Ivan

You amaze me again with how well you can shoot macros with this tele lens + TC of yours! I've found only one tiger beetle last year and tried to get some shots with my Sigma 70-300 Macro but found out it's very difficult to keep the entire beetle in focus since it's always on the move.
You managed that superbly here and with a bigger gear so my compliments once again!
Wonderful capture of this pair with excellent details, light and even diagonal compo.

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Hello Ivan !
Geat picture of these beautiful bugs ! I love their color, and you have captured them so nicely, with great details, wonderful composition, nice POV, and everything is just excellent. Very well done !
Valérie.

Hello Ivan,
a splendid capture of the pair of Cicindela campestris, outstanding sharpness and vivid colours, very good timing in a nice composition.

Hi Ivan,

An excellent photo of these attractive insects, very sharp, excellent detail. They look very similar to our common species here, 6-Spotted Tiger Beetle, Cicindela sexguttata. I find them to be very challenging to photogrpah, as they're constantly moving, usually.

Thanks,
John
