Burnt Orchid - Orchis ustulata

We’ve just spent a few days on the island of Öland along the southern coast of the Baltic. The southern part of this island consists of a unique limestone plateau, 40 km in length and 10 km wide. This barren area, covered with only a thin layer of soil, supports a great number of rare plants including orchids like this little ‘Burnt Orchid’ that was just coming into flower. It is not that easy to discover as it is very small, 10-20 cm (4-8 inches), with a slender stalk and small low leaves.

The pattern of growth of this little Orchid is quite unique. In order for a seed to germinate the presence of a fungus is necessary. This helps provide the seed with food. After several years an underground rhizome is formed which is intertwined with the fungus threads and eventually roots develop and the first leaves appear. The co-existence between a fungus and a plant is called ‘mycorrhiza’ = fungus root.

The English name, ‘Burnt Orchid’ and the Swedish name ‘Krutbrännare’ (Gunpowder burner) refers to the flower buds at the top of the stalk that are very dark.

Hallo Ulla
This is soooooooooooooooooooooo beautiful. I can only but imagine looking at a whole field filled with these flowers. What a delightful view! The combination of colours in this image is splendid. How I wish I could see this with my own eyes. I find it hard to find the right words to describe what I am seeing in front of me, as I have never seen such an unique flower (or as far as I am aware of). The combination of shape, patterns and colours, makes this an exceptional flower. Kind regards and thanks for sharing this lovely flower with its strange name. Anna

Hi Ulla.
I like our very natural and beautiful shot. All vegetation are reproduced with great skill and taste with lovely passage from crisp sharpness of the FG and fine flowers to nice light blurriness of the BG. You managed to create a three-dimensional image with terrific details and sweet natural colours. Precise work. My kind wishes and TFS. I hope to see your new photo trophies from trip.

Hi Ulla,

Nice capture from this little orchid.
I have been also busy with posting flowers.
This one I have been never seen in the wild.
Fine colours and good composition.

Hi Ulla

This is a very nice post from you and nice to see some rather new and very beautiful orchids on TN from you :)
I too am hoping to find some this year...i just hope to have enough time to go to some mountains :)
You presentation here of these Burnt Orchids is great and your shot makes it quite obvious why they are named that :) The details are nice and the colors are lovely - isolating the flowers from the grass behind.
The choice of DOF is also good, but perhaps the only thing i would have tried different is a lower POV (if it was possible...you know the terrain better) to get an even more blurry BG.
Even so, a very nice post overall.

Bravo and TFS

Hello Ulla !

Fantastic work! Orchids look great hidden between grass. Very good portrait of meadow from special place. I hope you took some macro shots also. Good to see you both had good time on Öland.

The tiny petals of this Orchid look like toy aeroplanes my grandson keeps on drawing these days, Ulla :).
I like those polka dots on them. The darker buds on the top contrast beautifully with the open petals.
The colours are very dainty and the composition pleases the eye.
Thanks and regards.

Hello Ulla,
On Oeland you have seen a very pretty quatuor of Burnt orchids which you have well presented with a vertical composition. We have these same flowers close to my place in Valais too, but they are growing later, because of the altitude. It's realy a special flower and quite easy to identify by its special coloring and patterns.
Un grand merci

Hi Ulla,

I missed this photo of these very beautiful Orchids. I have never seen anything like them before. The colors, shadings and patterns are gorgeous. The clarity is wonderful so we get a marvelous view of the flowers. Lovely in the grassy setting. I have only seen Orchids growing in green houses here so this is a real treat for me.
