Sepsis punctum
Family: Sepsidae
Order: Diptera

The family Sepsidae groups some 250 species worldwide, 48 of which may be found in Europe. Almost half of that (21) belong to genus Sepsis. Althought their name is related to the terrible inflamatory infection of whole organism ending lethally in many cases, the flies are really harmless. Their larvae live in decaying organic matter, most often in animal feaces, sometimes on carcasses (they are used also in forensic entomology).
Imagines of this really tiny flies (2-4 mm long) may be found on flowers or among plants.

Flies of genus Sepsis have an interesting courship behaviour - they make some synchronic movements and wave wings to each other. I found this individual on a Rumex leaf, while it was waving to another fly.

Hello Michal,
Really cute picture of this Sepsis fly, "punctum" probably because of the spot on the wings. I like your composition a lot, and the little fly has such a cute attitude. Very narrative shot!
Well seen, well done!
Kind regards

Amazing capture, Michal. Your shot looks so different from the usual ones because of the nice composition you have presented. This wonderful macro shows very good details of the fly, and of the leaf as well. Effective use of flash lighting.

Hi Michal,

You captured a great moment...wow!
The details are just superb with nice sharpness and well-chosen POV. The eyes and thorax parts of teh fly are wonderfully shown. I like the contrast between the leaf's green color and the red color of the fly. It is simply marvellous!

Thanks for sharing!

Nice osiągnięciem i odtwarzanie, gratulacje!
Piękny dzień,

Hej, hej.
Bardzo dobra fotka, ostrość - żyleta. Gra świateł super wyszła!

Hi, Michal
Excellent macro of this bizarre little fly. Excellent flash exposure, focus and DOF. It looks like a cartoon insect - how can such a fat little thing possibly fly with those little wings? ;)
Best wishes, Nigel.
