Hey Joe :)
Nice to see a post from you, mate...even if it's not a constant thing anymore.
You are right - the eyes of a horsefly are magnificent and i've seen some incredible macros (yeah...with a Canon MP-E 65 lens) that really show them beautifully. However, i see here you pulling out some great results with a normal macro lens (not even with a TC or extender) which gives me some good hope for the next season...i might give it a shot myself :)
Anyway, back to your shot, what i really like about it is the full frontal approach. That really makes it look like an alien but also brings out those iridescent colors from the eyes.
Very well done, my friend!
Bravo and TSF
Horia
PS: still waiting for an e-mail form you with some ultra wide angle shots :) No worries though...absolutely no hurry ;)

I'm fine, thanks, and also just came back to TN after a couple of months. I immediately recognized your style and signature: you present us a superb macro picture, and the title suits the picture very well. The fly indeed has something terrific!
Kind regards

Hello Joe,
Nice to see that you post again! Very impressive this monster you caught on the top of a Ginger Beer! It really looks like coming from another world, I suppose it's the first creature waiting at the hell's door on beer-amateurs.. Most beautiful fine colors and top sharpness like always.
Have a nice weekend

Hi Joe.
It is extra-class shot in every aspect. Great scene at whole (I love reflections of the fly). Terrific POV and eye-contact. Outstanding details and sharpness and superb lights. Flash work is really top range. I think about this lens. Can you tell few key words about it? TFS and have a good weekend.
Alexei.

A beautiful frontal super-portrait of a horsefly Joe, good to see something from you again MF. The amount of detail you've managed with that lens is really astonishing, however those are not the real colours of the eyes, the crystalline multifacets serve as a diffraction grating and produce colours of the spectrum from white light. TFS this fine image indeed!

Hello Joe,
An impressive macro of this horse fly taken full front to show what remarkable compound eyes horse flies have. You also show the dagger-like blood-sucking mouth parts of this female Tabanus bromius with excellent sharpness and lighting.
Great work and nice to see you on TN again.
Cheers,
Ivan

Wow! I do not want to meet this creature Joe! ;>
Lovely presentation with perfect close-up of Tabaidae. But I think that this one is not so bad as it is sitting on the bottle of beer ;>
Very nice work!

Hi Joe,
you really squeeze the last droplets of top quality out of your macro lens here. I forgive you the beer bottle, the Horse fly front is just too much, awesome! Come to think of it, the beer might actually have helped you to steady the camera :-) !
Best regards

Love the dark golden colours and the way it makes the clear purple, green and red contrast in the eyes come forward.
