[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Spotted Pardalote (Pardalotus punctatus) is one of the smallest birds in Australia at only 8 cm (3.5in) in length. They are usually found foraging in the upper and middle canopy of eucaltypt forests and woodlands, which can make observation annoyingly difficult.

In late winter however, they descend to lower strata and unbelievably build their nest at the end of a tunnel excavated from soft earth, often in a stream bank or road/track cutting. The tunnel can be an amazing 90cm long, with an enlarged nest chamber at the end; the entrance to the tunnel is only 2.5 cm (1 in) diameter. Nesting is shared by both sexes, the returns to a perch near the entrance, checks for danger, then flies straight into the hole, an amazing spectacle that never ceases to amaze people when I show it to them.

The Spotted Pardalote is distributed through eastern and south-western Australia and is generally common.

This is a female; Iíll post a shot of the male tomorrow.

Hello Chris,
A superb capture of this little Pardalote. The lighting is superb to give you the colours, sharpness and great contrasting neutral Bg. The pose is excellent and the image well composed. This must be a new one on TN, if so congrats!
Thanks and have a good week,
Cheers,
Ivan

Hi Chris,
another bird that looks spectacular and is completely unknown to me. Good they have those excellent and patient photographers in Australia like you, Chris! The beak looks heavy-duty , it may be an adaptation to that burrowing behavior you described. Anyway, the note enhances the picture in many ways.
My best regards from Switzerland and the first snow
Dietrich
