The Gulf Fritillary or Passion Butterfly (Agraulis vanillae) is a striking, bright orange butterfly of the family Nymphalidae, subfamily Heliconiinae. These were formerly classified in a separate family, the Heliconiidae or longwing butterflies, and like other longwings this species does have long, rather narrow wings in comparison with other butterflies. It is not closely related to the true fritillaries. It is a medium to large butterfly, with a wingspan of from 6—9.5 cm. Its underwings are buff, with large silvery spots. It takes its name from the fact that migrating flights of the butterflies are sometimes seen over the Gulf of Mexico.

The Gulf Fritillary is commonly seen in parks and gardens, as well as in open country. Its range extends from Argentina through Central America, Mexico, and the West Indies to the southern United States, as far north as the San Francisco Bay Area on the west coast. It is occasionally found further north in the US.

Hello Jim,
A gorgeous butterfly with wonderful detail. The colors are vivid and bright. Love the beautiful wing patterns, they show up nicely in the composition you chose. Well done!!

Love this shot, it's going in my favourites

Hi and Good Morning Jim,

Though the upper sides of the wings a bit out of focus, this is realy amazingly beautiful and colourful macro capture of this Gulf frit showing its all wing details and pattern. Great usage of the shallow DOF that the subject stand out well.
TFS and have a nice day and new week!

HI Jim,

Hello Jin friend,

This is a picture of an exceptionally gifted side POV, I like how we see the top and bottom of the wings at the same time. I think the background perfectly complements this picture.

Here in Venezuela I have photographed this species very similar, so I appreciate that you publish, with that you have given me a sign of possible ID.

Very good job, with very good technique and good information attached.

TFS & regards,
