Quiraing Sunrise

This was one of those mornings that did not look especially promising with the clouds on the horizon going all the way down, but a slight breeze was enough to help break up the sky and allow the sunrise a little light through to lighten up the Quiraing.

The Quiraing are comprised of basaltic rocks, ancient lava-flows from 2.5m to 65 million years ago (Tertiary period), creating a mountain ridge that is gently sloping on one side with an easy platteau ridge and cliff on the other. This has formed becuase of the errosion of the layers of Basalt rock. The differing hardness of layers within this rock has caused uneven errosion creating the rock pinnacles and towers that form the northern end of the Isle of Skye, north of Portree.

At Quiraing, the errosion and landslip is still evident - the area is geologically unstable and the best thing that can be said about the road is that is places it is a disaster requiring frequent repair.

This was taken using tripod, 2 stop soft graduated neutral density filter, polarising filter, trigger release and mirror lockup on a photography course I was taking up there... well worth it.

This is full frame, uneditted - the colours are real, the soft light saturating the landscape and catching the rocky formations added to a really warm feel that morning - the redness is from this warm light and the bracken and browning grasses in the area. The graduated ND filter was placed at an angle to help deal with the sunlight coming in from the left and over exposing the left hand corner and just for once, there is no exposure compensation...

Hope you like it.

Emma

So good to see your images once more.....their qualities, especially in these mountain landscapes which you love so much.....artist quality...not just simply art but photoart which is unique and hard to accomplish. I remember when you brought that camera and then things went downhill....but here you are and so is the results. Well done. Stay well.

Un trabajo excepcional Emma.
Consigues introducirnos en el paisaje y hacernos soņar, y eso solo lo consiguen unas pocas fotografías. Calma, misterio, impresionantes luces y unos colores para soņar: enhorabuena!!!

Hi Emma
I liked even the thumbnail of your photos on your page , but this one was the first grabbing my attention.
Lovely, lovely, lovely pictue with a more than complete note ...
I think you've reddened the picture a little bit (with WB setting) and that has also contributed in the whole beauty of the scene.
Congrats and Thanks for sharing.

Hello Emma,
A beautiful landscape, so different of what we see around here, despite the mountains. A soft picture, fitting well to the autumnal colors. The point of view you have chosen is just perfect, including the lonely shrub at right and the open landscape on the left with the little lake in the background. Must be lovely to walk there!
Thanks and kind regards
Anne

Hi Emma

Oh YES! Yes, yes! These are some amazing condition and i hope to be so lucky in one day at least when i (hope) will visit Scotland and Skye next year.
This is such a typical landscape from there but one presented in a gorgeous and unique warm light. That, together with your high POV here allowed this magical feel and view over the entire valley and mountains in this region.
I really like your composition here as well, with the leafless tree in the foreground and that lovely lake in the back (adding the much needed splash of light to an otherwise dark valley).
The depth and perspective is awesome, too and your use of the ND grad did well to expose properly that side, too.
Overall, gorgeous work!

Bravo and TFS

Hi Emma,
what sight for sore eyes! Very well chosen POV, love the almost limitless depth you created here. The early morning light is gorgeous, soft and subtle. I admire your efforts for getting to this spot to catch the sunrise, i know what it takes to drag yourself out of bed. Well worth it though, this is stunning.

(surely you don't need to take a course?? ;o)

Hi Emma,
So more natural couldn't has been this picture!
Love it in every sense, lighting creates a very special mood, like the one seen in the masterpieces of old dutch painters.
Great composition with the inclusion of the small lake and tree.
Congrats and thanks for the pic.
Take care,
JM
