Dear colleagues from TN, will present today and top of the tallest in the Alps. Matterhorn is called and is 4478m.
Not a great picture because weather conditions were not exactly the most appropriate.
I look forward to your comments and criticisms.
Have a nice weekend,

The Matterhorn (German), Cervino (Italian) or Cervin (French), is a mountain in the Pennine Alps. With its 4,478 metres (14,692 ft) high summit, lying on the border between Switzerland and Italy, it is one of the highest peaks in the Alps and its 1,200 metres (3,937 ft) north face is one of the Great north faces of the Alps. It is one of the deadliest peaks in the Alps: from 1865 – when it was first climbed – to 1995, 500 alpinists died on it. The mountain overlooks the town of Zermatt in the canton of Valais to north-east and Cervinia in the Aosta Valley to the south.

The Matterhorn is an iconic emblem of the Swiss Alps and the Alps in general. Its first and tragic ascent by Edward Whymper and party marked the end of the Golden age of alpinism.

The Matterhorn has two distinct summits, both situated on a 100-metre-long rocky ridge: the Swiss summit (4,477.5 m) on the east and the Italian summit (4,476.4 m) on the west. Their names originated from the first ascents, not for geographic reasons, as they are both located on the border.

In August 1792, the Genevese geologist and explorer Horace Bénédict de Saussure made the first measurement of the altitude of the Matterhorn, using a 50-footlong chain spread out on the Theodul glacier and a sextant. He calculated a height of 4,501.7 metres.

The Matterhorn has a pyramidal shape with four faces facing the four compass points: the north and east faces overlook, respectively, the Zmutt valley and Gornergrat ridge in Switzerland, the south face (the only one south of the Swiss-Italian border) fronts the resort town of Breuil-Cervinia, and the west face looks towards the mountain of Dent d'Hérens which straddles the border. The north and south faces meet at the summit to form a short east-west ridge.

The border between Italy and Switzerland is the main Alpine watershed, separating the drainage basin on the Rhone on the north (Mediterranean Sea) and the Po River on the south (Adriatic Sea). The Theodul Pass, located between the Matterhorn and Klein Matterhorn, at 3,300 metres, is the lowest passage between the Valtournenche and the Mattertal. The pass was used as a crossover and trade route for the Romans and the Romanised Celts between 100 BC and 400 AC.

The deeply glaciated region between the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa is listed in the Federal Inventory of Landscapes and Natural Monuments.

Hi Adrian!
Excellent photo, super into such tops I would like colours at one time to go.
I am greeting and I wish the nice weekend

Inspite of the weather you did a lovely job; it is a clear image.
Am writing to you from an old compter at the Hospice where my most beloved Mother-in-law is currently housed. When I go home I'll see if I can W/S this one for you. It is such a great GREAT photo that it will be magnificient if my software can do it justice.
Best regards from COLD COLD, 100 kms. wind & snow stormed Calgary.
P.S. Hope we get home tonight in one piece.

Hi Adrian,
for the weather conditions this photo looks to be alright but as you know it is not all it can be as you say the weather wasn't the best at the time.It is often that way here where I live at this time of year when I look out to the Rockies just 50Km to my west. The photo can be helped along somewhat with a few simple adjustments in shadow/highlight recovery and colour saturation and some sharpening, these things I have tried in the workshop mostly for the fun of it and my take on an alternative view is only that,as how a photo should is only a subjective thing.I sure would love to see this iconic summit with my own eyes as it and a handful of mountains really are so memorable.Thank you for sharing this famous mountain, which even in poor light is just so recognizable.

Looks like a brooding bird from this perspective and in this kind of weather, Adrian.
Still, Matterhorn is one of the shapliest peaks in the world and its majesty has been captured well here.

really one of the greatest geographical natural structure.

Hi Adrian

I am living in sunny Zululand where the sun can really drill us all year round. Therefore,
I always admire and appreciate the wonderful snowy scenes you people up north get to
see, capture, and then present to us. Obviously the weather is something that can really
hamper the photographer when shooting these scenes, but fortunately we have the little
magic called "PhotoShop" which gives one the ability to enhance what the camera has
seen. I think Bob gave a good rendition to show the possibilities locked up within this nice
image. Your composition is great paying emphasis to the impressive range and dimension
of the Matterhorn. With the aperture set to f/14 you made sure to capture all the lovely and
intricate details of the mountain scene.

Well done and TFS.

PS. Thanks for all the visits and kind comments you made to some of my postings. I have some catching up to do.

hello Adrian
beautiful scene and for the lightning conditions good output, I wish your photo from the top!
keep photographing! TFS

Hallo Adrian!

Dear Adrian,
Mont Blanc at 4260 m (13976 feet)is the highest mountain of the European Alps.

I agree with Markus (heaven) about the interest of a photo showing the mountain in cloudy conditions. Did you take the photo from the Gornergrat?

I disagree about photoshopping this photo into an unnatural image - a bit like erasing all wrinkles from a portrait!

There is a bit of blue sky at 12 o'clock of your photo as well as a hint of sunshine on at 3 o'clock.

Your photo shows the viewer the brooding presence of the beautiful mountain.

I wish you a nice week-end

Hello Adrian,
Ver nice photo of this mountain. The light conditions are not ideal, but it looks natural. A bit correction like Bob suggets is possible. Good sharpness and an excellent composition.

Hi Adrian,
I like the Matterhorn shot in the shadow, it makes those steep walls even more scary than they are anyway. Of course the Matterhorn is one of the most portrayed mountains on Earth because it is so accessible and standing alone. There are some mountains looking quite similar to the Matterhorn, Mt. Ushba in the Caucasus for example. It is located in the Svaneti region of Georgia, just south of the border with the Kabardino-Balkaria region of Russia. You imagine well the complications to go there ... Funny, Mt. Ushba has been climbed first in 1888 by a Matterhorn guide from Zermatt, Ulrich Almer and an Englishman John Cokklin.
My best regards

Ciao Adrian, fantastic view of wonderful mountain, I like a lot Cervino from swiss POV, very well done, have a good week end, ciao Silvio

Hi Adrian,

Amazing landscape from the summits of Alps! It may not be the most interesting of images, but it's certainly one of the purest. Love the simplicity and peacefulness that this shot contains.
TFS and have anice Saturday MF!

Ciao Adrian.

Are o forma foarte interesanta varful asta de munte.
Numai bine.Alin.

Hi Adrian. Firsty thanks for the interesting notes . i should love to have been with you to see this beautiful sight. You say this is not a good picture it looks very natural to me. I am sure this is just how it looks on a dull day. Taken from a good pose. TFS.

Hello Adrian,
A spectacular image of this majestic peak. Nicely composed with just the right amount of exposure. Looks like a very desolate and cold area. Great work!! Very informative notes!

Ciao Adrian,
Grazie e complimenti
Buona settimana
Ciao Maurizio

Hi Adrian,
Also not a easy scene to capture with so much coverage of "reflective light"You have done well with the exposure in bringing out the majestic Matterhorn against a subdued BG.Well done,

Hello Adrian! Amazing mount. Wonderful POV and DOF, perfect light and colours, good contrast. Very fine note. Original shot. Well done!

Ah Yes, the famous Matterhorn, I have only seen it in Disneyland :) and it is impressive :) I can only imagine the real Matterhorn. I have been to Switzerland a few times but have not yet made it to Valais.
Very good close up shot, sharpness and clarity can be a little better, but good overall.

Hola Adrian.

A bientôt.
