This macro is of a globe thistle bloom (Echinops ritro). The globes are made up of hundreds of tiny flowers, though from a distance you might not notice this. They're loved by bees while blooming, and the seeds are a delicacy to finches and other birds. Come late summer and fall -- sometimes clear into winter -- the stems of these plants will be bobbing as birds hang on and feast. It's quite a show.

The bee was an unexpected surprise and, as you can see, he was making haste to enjoy the nectar.

This was shot hand-held in waning evening light. Cropped and ran USM, upped contrast a bit, and framed in PSP.

Check out this shot at TrekLens. This time I got the flower and the bee in focus. I did more PP on it, so posted it there.

Hi Kimberley, nice shot! The thistle looks great. It would have been a superb shot if the bee wasn't cut off and was in focus. It's nice as it is though, well done.

Great shot of the thistle Kim. Nicely focused and sharp showing all the intricate flowers. I find that is quite hard to do with a plant like this, so well done.
To me the bee is fine - it is the thistle that's on show, and he's just an added bonus. Bravo!

You know what...there is something interesting about that bee being out of focus. I guess I have a different sense of aesthetics. :)

Hi Kimberly,
Great color and exposure, with the thistle dominating the frame. I prefer the TL post of course, with the honey bee well focused there..
Well done.

Kimberley, this is a very nice moment.

I checked the shot at TrekLens, and it's great too.

As for this, I like composition and colors a lot.
