[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Orangutans live in the tree tops of the Southeast Asian tropical rainforests of Sumatra and Borneo. They spend most of their lives in trees and descend from the trees very rarely. The name orangutan means literally "man of the forest" in Malay. The Sumatran subspecies (pongo pygmaeus abelii) is generally lighter in color.
Orangutans are important seed dispersers for many species of tropical fruit trees. Increasingly, they also economically benefit Sumatra and Borneo by attracting "eco-tourism."
P. pygmaeus is listed as "endangered" and p. abelii is "critically endangered" by loss of habitat.
Taken at the Cincinnati Zoo. Shot with a monopod, desaturated and sharpened.

Fantastic shot! The orang looks to be part of the tree itself. I love the close composition and the B&W.

This photo practically leaps off the screen. I love the black and white effect, it really brings out the textures and shadows so well. I love the look on the orangutang's face, almost like he's kissing the tree branch, gazing off deep in thought, such wise eyes! I really like this photo, well done.

This is a very beutifull black and white photo.
It worked realy well.

Hi Greg. Great mood shot that somehow reflects the plight of these intersting animals. I would love to have seen the colour version but perhaps you will post that another time. His location and expression give humour to the image. Well done, Rob

Strikingly beautifull B&W Greg! Composition and form in this photo are very nice. The expression of his face is also very well captured with a lot of emotion in it. Great work!
