The city of Cheney is built in an area which is surrounded by natural wetlands. Wetlands are also inside of the city and because the US Government protects wetlands at all costs, large parts of the city are built around wetlands. When driving though town I can spot over 10 wetland areas within a mile of my home. In some sense and in the minds of many naturalists and scientific persons, the wetlands are much more important than the city itself.

I took this image just after noon today on the edge of town. I was on a small, dirt road which crosses between two major wetland areas. And during the summer I come here often to watch the native birds. During a normal winter this road is impassable. This winter has been quite different and also quite rainy instead of snowy....so I had a lucky chance. Had I not set my white balance manually outside before taking the picture, you might not have had a true representation of this area. It is teeming with wildlife, some small some hiding..but today it was barren of mammals with exception of myself.

Hello Bob,
It's nice to know that they are protecting wetlands like this in your area. I have seen many swamps and wetlands drained for housing developements here in Ohio since I was a kid. This looks like a haven for many critters to live in throughout the year.
You have photographed it nicely and have shown it with wonderful detail, color and exposure!!

Hi Bob,
I like the note that accompanies your photo as it is wonderful to know that wetlands are protected and respected in your neck of the woods, too bad I can't say the same where I live.I wish I had ten areas of wetlands to scope out when out photoing wildlife and plants as for me at least, those places are more interesting than anything man-made,hands down.

This photo is an interesting shot showing green living plants(they are alive,I presume)and last summer's and fall's former living brown plants.I am amazed at the depth of field with almost of the image in sharp focus and at f/2.8 at that. The animals are there in the area to be sure and often I go out and encounter the same seeming barren scenes as well and oddly enough a day later so many creatures will be around that photoing them becomes a chore.Where do they go when they don't seem to be around.A fine time of the season shot with good colour and well focuses details. There is a dark side to weather conditions that make for just such a shot and that is sickness, flus and colds are more common when the land is damp and cold.I like winter to be cold but not overly so,a good temperature around -5F the whole winter through is ideal but with the rain you speak of my joints would be nagging at me too much for it to be enjoyable. Thanks for sharing.

Hello Robert! Nice stream. Good POV and exposure. Very good colours. Superb contrast and sharpness. Well done!

Hello Bob,
very interesting picture and note, the natural wetlands are universal estate, but ....the money makes one short-sighted; good sharpness and splendid natural colours, very well composed.
Best regards

Hello Bob,
This kind of areas are in general full of life, once you look a little bit closer..happy to read that they are protected. I like this kind of places, mix of water and fine grasses. Your picture shows a very natural place where I can easily imagine Bob Shannon walking around.. you have chosen a fine point of view too.
Kind regards

Hi Bob,

I would love to see Cheney and its surroundings one day - but not in the winter. No wetlands in dry Arizona! A wonderful shot - I love the curve of the water. I'm surprised to hear you are snow free.

You must have our rain and us your snow Bob! Still, this is a nice, details image that shows the subject well and has nice rudty tones. I like the snaking water in the background, your composition has created good depth, nicely done!

Wonderful composition. Love the "meander". There's always something very pleasing about any "S" in a photo. :D
