Male Calliope Courtship display, gorget flared, beak open in front of a prospective mate. This image took me four years to get as the display only lasts for a few seconds, and 99.9% of the time in a location I have not been fast enough to swing the camera to!. Won first prize in the nature catagory CPC Elevate World Wide WOW Photo Contest and Silver Star award in the 2009 International Aperature Awards

Hi Wally

This is absolutely phenomenal! It's been a while since i've seen bird (or actually any animal) shots of this quality here on TN.
The timing here, the sharpness and depth of field, the general and fill-in lighting...all are simply perfect!
...And that pose of the male - with his "blue beard" out like that...wow!!! I'm actually speechless!
Definitely a favorite. My sincere compliments and i truly hope you enroll this in a competition to get what it's worth :)

BRAVO and thanks for sharing

Hi Wally,
what a beautiful and charming photo this one is.The sharpness of focus and the clear colour makes this a tour-de-force of a photo and well worth waiting four years to achieve. The birds look very nice against the background you caught them in,with the pleasant tones and hues of blue giving a very fine contrast to those little birds.I can see just what the female is attracted too and that is the male's gorget which is so much like a flower, how could she not notice!A superb and very fine photo and thank you for sharing two very fine and lovely little birds with us all-outstanding.

I love hummingbird confrontation photos, and this is the best one that I can imagine!
The "beetlejuice" display of the calliope is very rare to catch on film.
I live in Atlanta, GA, and am considering a trip to the NW US just to try to get an image like this!
Great image, very dramatic.
