Today has been my lucky day!
A very rare visitor was reported about 60 km (40 miles) north of us and she was still there when we arrived.

This is the first time this species has been posted on TN from Europe. There are three from Asia.

Red-flanked Bluetail female (Tarsiger cyanurus)

Swedish name: Blåstjärt, meaning ‘Bluetail’.

Normally this species nests in the Taiga forests of N. Asia and it overwinters in SE Asia.
In recent years some pairs have spread westwards to nest in N. Finland, but only a few have been reported in Sweden and normally in the summer and never as far south as this!

The males have a blue back and head and like the female reddish orange flanks.

This female seemed unafraid of the dozen or so birdwatchers and I was able to take this at a distance of about 5 meters with my long lens hand held and after light cropping and size reduction it was selectively sharpened

Hi Ivan,

I've heard of storm chasers but it sounds much nicer to be a bird chaser! How did the word get out? You were so lucky this adorable bird stayed around for you. Must be so exciting to get such a rarity. I love the pose - she reacted well to the camera. A lovely little face and plumage shown with your always fine colors and details. She reminds me of a Wren.

Hi Ivan,

Back for a visit and post thanks to Loot and I have been looking through the gallery to see who is still active that I know. Excellent capture on a species I have never heard of. The exposure looks very good here. Nice soft even lighting and fine detail in the plumage. love the pose and head angle. This allowed for a nice catch light in the eye.

Well Done..

Hi Ivan

Hats off MF. This is underlining you dedication and great passion for nature, to travel
60km, hopeful that when you get there your expectant trophy is still going to be there.
Fortunately for you, and for us, it was waiting for you and now we have the pleasure
to also see what it is that makes someone do such an extraordinary feat to capture a
tiny LBJ fluff-ball. Because of the rarity (European sighting and the 1st posting from
EU turf) I decided to place this in my theme for "RARE or SIGNIFICANT contributions
to TN". It is a little cutie.

Well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hi Ivan,

You're lucky to capture her - she was waiting and posing for You. :) Top quality photo as always from You, and of course congrats for finding. It's fantastic You travelled so much for maybe shooting this young lady.

I clicked on www.birding.hu for more (local) infos of this species - the site writes Bluetail (the Hungarian name's the same) is also nesting in Finland and Estonia beside Russia and other Asian countries. Rare winter visitor in Hungary.

Tfs the story and the fantastic image, friendly regards from Hungary, László

Hello Ivan, amazing shot of this beauty with nice details and composition.
