[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
A tiny Bank Vole (Clethrionomys glareolus). This cute little creature was taken on Christmas Day 2009 at the RSPB Arne nature reserve near Wareham, Dorset. My wife and I had only just got out of the car when we saw a pair of voles scurrying in and out of the undergrowth - taking advantage of seeds falling from bird feeders.

They are very quick when on the move, but fortunately this one paused for a few seconds in the sunshine allowing me to capture a few shots. It was a pity about the shadow across its face - I know I could remove this in Photoshop but to me that is too much processing. The shot has been cropped and sharpened.

I found the following information on Bank Voles at http://www.uksafari.com

"Size: Length from nose to base of tail is approximately 80mms. The tail is a further 60mms long.

Distribution: Found throughout England, Scotland, Wales and many of the Islands. Absent from Northern Ireland.

Months seen: All year round.

Habitat: Found in hedgerows, banks and verges, especially in deciduous woodland.

Food: Nuts, seeds and berries.

Special features: This is the smallest vole found in the UK. It has very prominent ears and a chestnut-brown coat. They can be distinguished from mice by their shorter, blunt, almost hamster-like noses.

They live in underground chambers, accessed via a tunnel with an entrance hole about 3cms in diameter. Inside the chamber they keep a store of food."

Kind Regards

Vinny www.vincentblood.com

I went to Arne a couple of times over the xmas break - how icey was the car park??
This is a great capture of these elusive creatures, the shadow doesn;t boither as i think it only adds the 'covert' nature of the animal. Fine detail and nicely framed.

Hi Vinny

I have never seen a bank vole (I don't think so anyway) despite the fact that they live on the riverbanks around our house!! Well seen and captured - excellent eye contact, detail and lighting.
