Hello,

this is the view east over Old Harry Rocks, at Hand Fast Point. These iconic chalk rocks mark the eastern end of the Jurassic Coast UNESCO World Heritage Site, the 'youngest' part of the coastline that was formed in the Cretaceous Period from the gradual build up of billions of shells of dead sea creatures. They are a famous landmark in the UK and a favourite with landscape photographers, myself included.
Taken on a breezy summers evening last year, the swaying grasses proved to be impossible to catch crisply in the fading light with a relatively slow shutter speed and the ideal aperture of f/16.
So, i decided i'd try to blur the grass completely to give it an interesting effect and i waited awhile for the light to drop a bit further. Then i reduced the aperture to f/22 and managed to get a 3 second exposure before the colour left the sky completely, perfect for what i wanted...

Thanks for looking, have a great weekend everybody :o)

Hi Paul,
What magnificent scenery!
Magnificent POV with a top player. Beautiful details and colors.
I would love to me to see for myself that.
Especially since in Germany the weather is so ugly ... Days and snow town.
Thanks for this opportunity to see and November this gorgeous landscape.
The thoughts and friendly greetings,
Adrian

Hi Paul,

Hello Paul,
Great photo in very beautiful colours with these pink colours behind the clouds. The white cliffs are fantastic. You've chosen the best POV for the best possible composition. The grasses in front are a very nice contrast.
Regards,
Peter

Mate, this is superb!!!
You did great to use the wind to your advantage here instead of trying to fight it...the result is so much more dramatic this way!
I really like the attention this blurry grass attracts and the way it contrast with the rocks and sea. It's so nice and interesting, in fact, that i almost wish you would have a bit more in the frame. I know that's not possible...not with this composition and not with a good view of the rocks (you would have had to step back from the edge), so don't worry about that :)
The clouds look wonderful as well and your exposure control on them is top-notch!
Very nice perspective created from this POV with the rocks leading towards the horizon...wonderful work there, too.
Overall...SPLENDID!

Bravo, TFS and have a nice weekend my friend!
Horia

Hello Paul,
Fantastic capture! Very nice colours and good choose for the aperture and exposure. The composition is excellent with a nice curve of the rocks and the grasses in the wind as foreground. Have a good weekend,

Hi Paul. For anyone who comes from Dorset they will know this place so well. .You have timed this one just right with sun just about gone for the dat but still giving a warm glow to the sky. The which of the rocks stand out so well. I like the OOF in the grass . well taken TFs.

Hi Paul

A beautiful composition - your handling of the light here is great. Excellent dof.

Best wishes

James

Really stunning Paul,
All parts of this photo are beautiful. The slow shutter not only given you a nice blur in the grasses but also soften the texture of the ocean. I really love the colors here since they are not too bright and give the entire photo a very pleasant mood. The composition is awesome with the white rock face leading the eye to the wonderful sky.
TFS,
Niek

Hallo Paul
My time on Trek Nature is very limited now a day and I missed out on some great images, including this picture perfect portrayal of Old Harry's Rocks. I am glad I now have a few spare minutes to visit this wonderful view. This image is not only soft on the eye due to the special arrangement of colours but it is one of those I refer to as PPP – a pretty, perfect, picture. An absolute dreamscape to look at. Thanks for sharing and best regards.
Anna

Hi Paul,

The point of view is sending my eyes toward the horizon which is giving depth to the composition. Using a tripod and an exposure speed of 3 seconds have allowed me to admire the scenery. The sunset iis giving nice colors to the sky, the rocks and the sea. Well done, have a nice day.

Pierre
