Gagea is a large genus of spring flowers in the Liliaceae. The distribution area of Gagea is restricted to temperate and subtropical regions of Eurasia. It is named after the English naturalist Sir Thomas Gage. Gagea were originally described as species of Ornithogalum, which, together with the usual yellow colour of the flowers, explains the English name Yellow Star-of-Bethlehem for the most common species in Europe, Gagea lutea.
It is not easy to identify the 240-250 species of this genus. Among them they are 36 Mediterranean species, including 21 endemic to this region.
If you are interested by Gagea sp., I recommend to see some very good contributions already posted on TN of the Gagea fan club:
- Gagea pratensis,
- Gagea bohemica,
- Gagea granatelli by Herve Gomila;
- Gagea taurica by Bayram Göçmen;
- Gagea villosa by Luciano Gollini;
- Gagea chlorantha by Ori Fragman Sapir;
- Gagea commutata by Ishi Talmon;
- Gagea lutea by Cezar Valentin Tomescu.
With my thanks to these good photographers for their shots and useful notes and contributions!

Here is my contribution for the Gagea fan club!
And it is a new species for TN too! The photo was taken in a terraced organic olive grove.

hello Catherine,
Hope you'll be doing fine dear lady.This is a really very wonderful shot. The sunlight is so perfect that the flowers and the green stalks and leaves appear so natural that one feels if one likes one can pick them........but wild flowers are wild and look beautiful that way.The focus is superb, the colour details are exquisite and the angle is good. Thanks a lot for sharing.....take care...warmest regards.Abid

Hi Catherine!

It is very interesting to read your notes and to follow the links concerning this beautiful plant. I like this flower a lot, especially for its plain beauty and the delicate shapes. Your picture with the simple and effective composition, the lightplay and the fine colours highlight the flower's characteristics at best.

Kind regards

Bonjour Catherine,

Beautiful photo, fantastic colors and lights. Excellent exposure, background, light management etc. - I bookmark the image as one of my favorites. Tfs.

Also a very good idea to establish a "Gagea Fan Club" on TN - we all love this small lilium, because it's one of the earliest bloomers in spring, and quite common (at least G. lutea in Hungary). Congrats for the idea / note, too.

Best regards, have a nice Sunday, László
