Hipparchia syriaca - Büyük Karamelek [TR], Syrian Rock Grayling, Syrian Tree-Grayling [EN] is a common butterfly in Turkiye, from the family SATYRIDAE (LEPIDOPTERA). It ranges almost in all provinces. Its general distribution is in Southern Europe, Turkiye, Azerbaycan, the Caucasus, and Syria.
It inhabits in forests and mountain slopes up to 2000 m a.s.l. Adults roost on moisty soils, seashores and animal faeces. They like to rest roosting on tree trunks.
Its wingspan is 52-57 mm. Flight period is between June and October. Their larvae feed on plants of the genus Holcus and some other Graminacean herbs from the family POACEAE.

The genus Hipparchia represented by 8 species in 3 subgenera:

... - Hipparchia (Hipparchia) syriaca - Büyük Karamelek [TR], Syrian Rock Grayling, Syrian Tree-Grayling [EN],
... - Hipparchia (Neohipparchia) fatua - Anadolu Karameleği [TR], Freyer's Grayling [EN],
... - Hipparchia (Neohipparchia) parisatis - Beyaz kenarlı Karamelek [TR], White-bordered Grayling [EN],
... - Hipparchia (Neohipparchia) statilinus - Ağaç Karameleği [TR], Tree Grayling [EN],
... - Hipparchia (Parahipparchia) aristaeus - Güneyli Kurşini Kelebek [TR], Southern Grayling [EN],
... - Hipparchia (Parahipparchia) mersina - Mersin Kızılmeleği [TR], Mersin Grayling [EN],
... - Hipparchia (Parahipparchia) pellucida - Anadolu Kızılmeleği [TR], Anatolian Grayling [EN],
... - Hipparchia (Parahipparchia) volgensis - Rus Kızılmeleği [TR], Volga Grayling [EN].

There are additional two species:
... - Hipparchia (Hipparchia) fagi - Orman Karameleği [TR], Woodland Grayling [EN],
... - Hipparchia (Pseudotergumia) pisidice - Arabistan Karameleği [TR], Sinai Grayling [EN].

These are included in some check-list of Turkish butterflies. However, there is no enough evidence about presence in the country.

I captured them in love into pine forest. Their courtship dance was different, with very active movements, from most butterflies.
Dedication to another Turkish butterfly photographer Seyfi Karaman (KOMSIS) who posts many great macro-shots of butterflies. I hope he will like this post.

Salam Ahmet.

These two butterflies camouflage so well in their natural habitat. You have done well in spotting them and captured in very good details.

600mm is a long optics and you have handled the optics really well. I like it and have a wonderful day my friend.

Best regards,
Jusni

Hallo Ahmet
These two Syrian Rock Grayling's are really beautiful. Although well camoflaged the dark colours are clearly seen and is indeed striking. The wings have an almost velvetty appearance and the blotches of yellow in between very catchy. I like the pieces of dried wood, grasses and leaves on the surface that also creates the ideal framing. Yes, as Jusni said: "Well spotted". Thanks for sharing this lovely image as part of a dedication to a great photographer of butterflies, Seyfi. Best regards.
Anna

Salam Akhi Prof. Ahmet,
lovely and very unique butterfly indeed. The colour is very interesting and it camouflaged well with the surroundings.
The details and textures are very superb. I like this view as it is a real challenging situation. i think the light source must be very challenging but you did it very well.
Congratulations.

Regards,
Foozi

Merhaba Ahmet

Seyfi

Hello Ahmet,
A great capture of this pair of Graylings beautifully camouflaged against the dry leaves on the ground. I expect that these mostly tend to have their wings closed so you did well here! Fine details and colours of the uppersides and a beautiful composition.
TFS and kind regards, Ulla

Hola Ahmed'im,
Yine enteresan bir enstantane yakalamışsın, "aşk oyunları" detayı bir yana, doğanın sunduğu yüksek kamuflaj yeteneğine hayran olmamak olası değil. Kahverengili kompozisyonuna keza!
Sevgiyle kal dostum.
