Hello,

My dedication series is continuing. This time the corner of my heart is a lovely lady and our great friend, Jacqueline (Noisette), who dedicated an Agaricus pic to me some days ago. Now it's my turn, Madame. :)

We all think about Agaricus species as relatively big, compact mushrooms. So I'm glad to let You know some species of the genera are quite small. Like this one, Agaricus semotus, which is now shown the 1st time on our TrekNature.

What's left from the rogersmushrooms site linked above: local (Hungarian) literature says it's edible, but due to its very small size, worthless. Not rare in the forests of Central Europe. Within the Agaricus genera it belongs to the section Arvenses, together with for example the well known edible A. arvensis (photo on TN). Each species has smell of anise more or less and flesh turning from white to yellow after breaking.

Possible confusions: some other small Agaricus species like A. dulcidulus (very rare in Central Europe), A. comtulus (rare) and A. porphyrizon (not common). All them are edible yet rather worthless.

Photo: in the Zemplén Mountains, in broadleaved forest, on a trip with my class-mates on the fungi course, September 2009. Selective sharpening on the cap, noise reduction, little level correction. In the workshop You can see the typical Agaricus-gills of this small-sized representative of the genera.

I hope You'll like it, thanx for stopping by and commenting. Cheers, László
