[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The genus Melampyrum consists of about 10-20 species of herbaceous flowering plants in the family OROBANCHACEAE (LAMIALES), native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. They are hemiparasites on other plants, obtaining some mineral nutrients from the host plant, though they are able to survive on their own without parasitising other plants.
The plants from this genus are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including Mouse Moth.
There are three species of this genus in Turkiye;
... - Melampyrum cristatum
... - Melampyrum pratense
and
... - Melampyrum arvense - Pembeot, Bıldırcın Buğdayı [TR], Field Cow-wheat, Poverty Weed [EN], a hemiparasitic plant using a wide range of plants as hosts, especially grasses.
Field cow-wheat inhabits in altitudes of 150-2100 m. It flowers from May to September, the flowers being pollinated by bumblebees.
This annual plant occurs in Europe, extending to the Ural Mountains in the east, southern Sweden in the north and the northern Mediterranean in the south and also England. In recent years it has declined in France, Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands. In Turkiye, this Euro-Siberian element is found especially northern sides, rarely Inner Anatolia [A2 A3 A4 A5 A6 A7 A8 A9 B2 B7 B8 B10 squares in Davis' grid system]. The species is represented in Turkiye by two varietas:
... - Melampyrum arvense var. arvense
... - Melampyrum arvense var. elatius.
Later is endemic to Trabzon and Rize provinces in Eastern Black Sea (Karadeniz) Region. But nominotypic form has same distribution of the species.
