Today is a rainy cold and overall nasty day to be outside. I've been babysitting the grandkids most of the morning, but occasionally I glance out the window to see if there are any birds in the Backyard.

I noticed a very large group of blackbirds had been hitting the corn field just across the street, so I decided to step out the door and get a quick shot off.

The birds allowed me to get about 50yds. from them before they took off. I first assumed they were all either Grackles or European Starlings until they flew up and I was able to get a good look. I was excited to see that the majority were Red-winged Blackbirds along with a few Cow Birds, Grackles and some European Starlings thrown into the pot.

I cropped the original image for this shot. I was using my Canon 70-200MM lens and had the ISO set for 640. I tried to pan with the birds as they were flying.

I will post the original image in the WS. which is still only about 20% of the entire flock of birds that I viewed.

Hola Ron.
This is first class photo of a lot of birds. beautiful colors and BG.
Just Beautiful, it could be in the front page of a Magazine.

Hello Ron,
Exceptional composition with wonderful details and sharpness. Superb vivid colours and
very good clarity.

Hello Ron,
You 'tried' to pan? Actually it happens to be successfully done
as the birds are overall surprisingly sharp.
Have a question...
Do you like your 5D MarkII tool and do you use it to film as well?

Hi Ron! Really great cropping job! We always look for the blackbirds and have often wondered which birds migrate together. You have answered this question in the best possible way! Can hear the cacaphony of calls in my mind's ear. You have done a really great job, the wing positions are absolutely riveting! Thanks so much for sharing this fine, fine photo! Linda

That's a beautiful shot Ron. I love the clarity first off. Secondly the depth of field is wonderful creating a really nice background. Lastly it's a real boquette of colours. Very nicely taken. TFS Trevor

I love it!
The aperture, lens, and shutter came together to create the seemingly plane of birds flying a equal distance past the lens. Very sharp considering the motions involved, with crisp black, red, yellow.
Very well done my friend!

Hola Ron: Una de mis especies favoritas, que buena foto y que registro más bueno de esta cantidad de bellas aves. Y como siempre más machos que hembras...saludos.

hello Ron

i love both photos, this one for the excellent details of the
birds wings and i love much more the one of the WS
because more environmental shot with all that group of
the blackbirds & cie, i would love to assis to such a scenery
of small birds in migration flight, a friend of me told me
yesterday he saw 2 red-winged blackbirds here in Laval,
it is sign of spring, thus year here he had a very beautiful winter,

Hi Ron,
Magic shots, I love both. Beautiful composition with great timing, sharpness (almost all birds are sharp) and colors. Trying to pan was a very good idea - probably that's why You captured a clear in-flight shot with 1/400. Great choice and job, congrats and tfs.
Hopefully we in Europe will have such large migration groups of birds - this should mean the real spring.
Friendly regards, have a nice weekend, László

Great pov and sharpness with fine colours.

Hi Ron!

I'm impressed and delighted by the beauty and the impact of this picture! It's just mervellous to see these red spots flying away! And you have captured them in a perfect manner. The warm colour tones of the background nicely contrast with the dark birds. This creates a very strong and pleasant effect.

Kind regards

Hi Ron,

I know this is just a small piece of your original photo, but it's quite dramatic. The BG is nicely blurred so that the image seems to be three-dimensional. I've never seen so many male RW Blackbirds showing their red and yellow patches at the same time. It no doubt helped that you caught them when they suddenly all took off. Very nice, sharp, colourful shot. TFS.

Hello Ron.
A fantastic picture!
Great capture of this birds in full flight migratory!
I do not know how you get this focus as accurate...the definition is simply perfect!
Very well done!
José Roberto

Hi Ron
Please send these wonderful and colorful Red Winged Blackbirds my way. I was just talking about these birds yesterday and was hoping they would return here soon. This is an amazing capture, a rare sight to see, at least for me. Well done.

Hi Ron,

I have some catching up to do! This amazing sight caught my eye immediately. I have seen this Blackbird only once and the idea of seeing a flock like this is thrilling. You captured them beautifully with their red wings flashing. Colors and details are excellent - I love all the assorted positions. Wonderful shot!
