[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Polistes dominula (typically misspelled as dominulus), sometimes referred to as the European paper wasp, is one of the more common and well-known species of social wasps in Europe. It is considered an invasive species in Canada and the United States.
Nests are begun by overwintered foundresses, who spend about a month in the spring constructing a nest and provisioning offspring, the first of which will become daughter workers in the growing colony. Males are produced later, and when they start to appear, a few daughters may mate and leave their nest, to become foundresses the next season. The switch from production of workers to production of future foundresses ("gynes") is not utterly abrupt, therefore, as has been considered the case for other species of Polistes.

Hi Nikos , this is an outstanding image , I like it as soon as I open it , firstly the moment captured with the wasp making its start to a new nest is simply fascinating , the texture of that nest is so clear I can feel it , the light and color very natural, one detail I really like here is the reflection of the nest in the insects eye , for some reason that keeps drawing my eye.

great stuff
thanks for sharing it
regards

Hello Nikos,
A most beautiful and interesting picture you present here. Not only with excellent composition, sharpness and beautiful color-contrast, but also very interesting picture by its subject. Informative and very pleasing to the eye. Bravo!!
Kind regards
Anne

Dear Nikos,
I found your photo when trawling the site for images for my theme ""Animal Behaviour""

It is - together with your good notes - a very interesting testimony to the saying ""as busy as a bee/wasp...""

I was amazed to see you needed only 400th of a second without flash - because normally - wasps never sit still very long :-)) by the way their sting is extremely sore/poisonous (to suffer if you disturb them at the nest).

We also have paperwasps in South Africa and their nests vary slightly from area to area - but in principle look like the one in your photo.

I like the way you cropped the photo tightly, drawing all attention to the animal.

The great depth of field offers lots of details.
Splendid photo! Thanks.

Have a nice evening,
Regards from South Africa
Ingrid
