I have so many photos to share from Greece (Ikaria and Samos) and Turkey… But as some TN members have already shared nice Ophrys from Greece, I will join them in uploading an endemic and very attractive Ophrys from Samos, found in the south of the island.

Ophrys herae Hirth & Spaeth, 1992
Family: Orchidaceae

Etymology : after godess Herae.
Biotope : similar to Ophrys mammosa, usually at more acidic soils. From 0 to 800m.
Flowering time: February- Begin april

This species is originally described from Samos island. Originally described by Hirth & Spaeth in 1992 from the island of Samos, it was considered to have quite a broad distribution in Greece, from the Ionian islands in the West to the Aegean ones in the east, extending also south to Crete, and even farther east to Cyprus. But more recently Monika Hirth restricted its distribution to the sole island of Samos, and described O. janrenzii from Corfu. The name of O. x pseudomammosa auct. non Renz was also used for the Cretan plants.
The pollinator is Andrena thoracica. The main characteristic of this species is the light colour of the basal field of the lip (orange-olive green).

A beautiful specimen captured quite expertly Catherine, which looks a little like a reclining negro baby!
TFS and cheers,

Hello Catherine,
Dear friens, this is a beautiful orchid flower, bathed in a lovely light. I think you've grasped the lines of the flower, to compose perfectly. There is a slight blur on the orchid's main lip , but it is almost imperceptible. The fund, as always, is a poem! TFS, Jesús

Hello Catherine
What an amazing and unique looking orchid you captured. Your close view reveal nice details including the fine hairs. Wonderfully composed with great notes.

Shalom Catherine,

Lovely species indeed. After six days of Orchid hunting on Rhodes (just back home), I'm quite confused by the fragmentation of the Ophrys species. One wonders whether the different forms on different islands are justifiably different species.

In any case, you capture is superb!

All the best,
