[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
For hundreds of years rumours circulated that white lions inhabited South Africa. It was not until 1975 that actual sightings confirmed this mysterious cat's existence. a litter containing two white lions ( male & female )and their normal tawny colored sister was spotted at the Timbavati Game Reserve next to Kruger National park. It was estimated that they were about eight weeks old. The following year another white lion cub was seen living amongst another pride.
The mortality rate amongst wild lions is extremely high. Even when the best environment conditions are present, such as adequate food and water. in this respect, the white lions were at an even greater disadvantage. in addition to the fact that it would be nearly impossible for them to sneak up on unsuspecting prey ; the white lions themselves became targets of predatory hyenas.
The population of the White lions is unknown but the most recent count was in 2004 and 30 were alive.

great portrait shot of the lion, great detail you can see all the scars on its nose... and the green/blue eyes make the picture I think...nice one!

Great portrait of this lion.
The detail is excellent showing us the fur and I love the green coloured eyes.
It might have been better not to have the top of the mane out of the picture though.

Curious, is not as white as I thought it would be a White Lion! However, the picture is beautiful ... is full of eloquence ... although, I must say, you owe much of this work, the fascinating look of this huge cat! Good work MF, you never cease to surprise!

Hi George,it's a strange to see surprise to see a pic like that taken from the king of macro..but the result is always the same,fantastic quality and great sharpness and colors...the emerald eyes are 2 pearls inside this portrait.Thanks for share,have a good night,LUCIANO

What a privelage to have captured and even seen a white lion as you said there are only 30 left [ great pity].Where did you take this shot?.Excellent photo with superb perspective and pinsharp subject.Good exposure has created some intense yet seemingly sad expression on the scarred lions face.The photo is nicely cropped and good choice of the thin black frame.
