Club-tailed dragonfly - Gomphus vulgatissimus - Beekrombout.

Club-tailed dragonflies are medium-sized yellow-green and blackcoloured, with a noticeable club-shaped tail. In mature adults theeyes are a dull green colour and donot meet over the top of the head.

Adult dragonflies have alow zig-zagging flight andfrequently perch on the ground,in low vegetation or tree tops. They fly between early May tothe end of June. The cases left by the larvae whenthey become adults are short andsquat, unlike many other dragonflylarvae cases which are long andslender.

The larvae live on river bottoms eatingother insect larvae, water fleas, snails, tadpoles, and even small fish.Adults eat smaller flying insects, including small flies, midges andmosquitoes which they catch andeat in mid-flight, scooping them upwith specially-shaped legs.

Club-tailed dragonflies are found onmedium to large slow moving riverswith silty beds. After spending aroundthree to five years in the larval stagethe larvae emerge from the river, shedtheir larval cases and become adults. After emerging the adults fly to nearbywoodland, where males attract females in a courtship display. Adult males return to the river fromnearby woodland about a week afterthey have emerged from the larvae. Here they fight other males for thebest stretches of river, and search for females to breed with.

Poor river water quality, dredging and other destructive rivermaintenance is harmful tothis dragonfly. There is alsoonly a short period of timefrom mid May to mid June when the larvae emerge from the water and become adults.Trampling at this time from stock at the rivers edges can kill off larvae as they try to emerge. It is important to have woodland with bracken-filled glades not too far from the river, where theadults can hunt and attract mates.

Adults often fly very high amongst the tree tops – higher than many other dragonflies –and can be found 5 or 6 miles from the river.

Hi Hans
Perfect shot of the Club-tailed dragonfly!
Details are so sharp! Congratulation!
Horia

HI Hans,
now I realy get jealous - and if Noord-Brabant wouldn't be soooo far away from me, it's about 700 km, I would visit you immediately to go outside with you to see these impressive dragons.
It's the right time now for them - but in this rainy and cold weather they will not come out - I hope to see them in a few weeks, keep your fingers crossed for me, thanks.
This shot can't be done better, a perfect POV, sharpness and light are excellent, I realy enjoy looking at this one.
Greetings
Sabine - wishnugaruda

Beautiful capture Hans. The white balance seems quite OK this time. Dept of field, well can be improved, of coarse and the tip of the nearest eye almost on the edge of the focus field. Good sharpness, and colors. Bravo!

George Veltchev
