Again some time elapsed since my last posting, had to look after some unavoidable business as usual and won't be able to post new ones in the coming several months, will be in Ovacik, Cesme again during the summer months...
The topic of my present posting is the shell of one of the most beautiful marine gastropods, a Queen Conch or Pink Conch, a Strombus gigas known from the tropical waters of Florida and West Indies.
Members of the genus Strombus usually have a solid shell with an expanded body whorl, narrow aperture thickened outer lip and a short siphonal canal. A characteristic of these shells is the "stromboid notch", an indentation near the posterior part of the outer lip through which one of a pair of tentacles, each carrying a well developed eye protrudes. The narrow operculum is horny, the foot very muscular and can move them along remarkably quickly. They prefer shallow warm waters with sandy or sandy-muddy bottoms, and are vegetarians.
The moderately long spire (top left) of the Queen Conch has short, blunt and strong spines at the shoulders of the whorls. Coarse spiral ridges and cords, sometimes with coarse axial ribs and folds are present near the columella of the body whorl. Strongly flared lip (bottom right) of the longish aperture extends posteriorly to almost level with the apex of the shell (top-left). Over it finely etched axial growth lines can be discerned. The narrow, horny operculum of the live mollusk has a razor-sharp edge, if the animal is disturbed in its habitat close to the beach, it can beat about wildly, and inflict deep wounds into a wader. Narrow but deep stromboid notch is not visible in this view. Short siphonal canal is slightly recurved. Colour pinkish cream to white, aperture a rich shining rose pink with some yellow areas ( will demostrate these features in a future posting). The species is consumed in huge quantities as food, rarely produces a pink pearl within its mantle folds.
The 17 cm long shell was photographed under directional ambient daylight with open-shade conditions coming from top-left to demonstrate the surface sculpturings of the shell, a contra placed white cardboard passive reflector was used to provide some fill-in illumination. A black BG was chosen.

Hi Mehmet,
not long ago I submitted an image of some fungi's placed on the white background and the editors of the website decided that it is a Studio shot!That image was removed from the site by them. I can not see why we can not learn from that images if they can provide some detail information about the species. Certainly in your case here the black background is giving us a great visual and contrasty isolation of the subject and the result is awesome, Mehmet! Great dept of field, powerful colors and tons of detail! Well done!

This is a fine capture of Queen Conch taken from a nice POV with excellent sharpness, colours and lighting to make this a very good portrait of the shell of this species.

I have not opportunity to visit TN when I wish and I have missed many your amazing pictures. Your shell pictures are blameless and this one is too.
