Ferns are everywhere in our bush. The Silver Fern is an iconic emblem in New Zealand. It features on stamps, coins, banknotes and the national coat of arms. But, above all, it is the sense of pride associated with the fern-branded All Black rugby jersey and national teams such as the Silver Ferns (netball) and Black Ferns (womenís rugby) that gives the fern an unassailable place in New Zealandís culture.

Ferns do not produce seeds, but instead bear SPORES on the underside of their FRONDS.

are fern FRONDS that bear SPORANGIA, e.g. the Ďfertile frondsí of ferns.

SPORANGIA are clusters of SPORES found on the underside of a SPOROPHYLL.

SPORES are the asexual reproductive cells on ferns.

Fern spores are contained in SPORANGIA, which are borne on the leaf surface in clusters called SORI.

SORI come in all shapes, sizes and locations. They may appear as dots, dashes or lines on the leaf blade. They may occur tucked under the leaf edge as in the maidenhair ferns or in particular arrays on the leaf surface. Here on the Silver fern they appear as small brown dots.

The world has many ferns , but NZ is the only country that has a green fern with a white / silver under-side, as you can see here - Cyathea dealbata.

It stands out really well and at night it seems to glow in themoonlight.

I took this photo to emphasise the 2 sides, and I was lucky therer were dark spores growing on the silver...

Hi Janice,
A perfect image demonstrating your accompanying notes.
Well I would have to say I enjoyed the 101 on ferns, I have very little knowledge on any flora and would of guessed some strange insect came along and attached their eggs to the underside of the silver fern. But thanks to you I now know. :)

Hi Janice,

Nice to see your post on TN. I guess that I never thought about ferns too much, except as decoration for flowers that I might buy for my wife. I appreciate the quick intro to them. I like your attractive, detailed and colourful photo. I was a bit confused initially about the green ferns and silver ferns. But, now I see that the tops (and possibly the entire other sides) of the silver ferns are green. Your DOF could have been a bit longer in this shot, in order to better include the top row of silver ferns. The blurred BG is great. Very effective and interesting submission. TFS.

Hello Janice,
Nice to see you here again and with a beautiful Fern close-up taken from a lovely POV. Excellent details and colours and very nicely framed!
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hy Janice
Very interesting fern, and well prezented by you! The spores are contrasting with the silver color of the leaves in a pleasant way! Nice composition too!

Hello Janice,
Superb capture of the frond of this endemic NZ fern. The silver underside showing the spore capsules is well shown with nice sharpness and colours to make an attractive image.
Thanks and greetings from a warm summery Sweden.

Great view of the silver underside Janice, nice details with the tiny spores clearly seen..
The Silver Fern may be iconic to New Zealand.
But to me, it will always be "iconic" of my good friend Janice Dunn :)
Well done!

Cioa Janice. wonderful graphic results and very good light.
