Northern Dune Tiger Beetle (Cicindela hybrida)

Swedish name: Brun sandjägare, meaning ‘Brown sand-hunter’. The name ‘sandjägare’ is used in Swedish for ‘tiger beetle’

This species has been posted before on TN but this is my first post of this species of tiger beetle.

The Northern Dune Tiger beetle is fairly common and widespread in most of Europe, in the right warm dry sandy habitat, especially near the sea but not close to water. It is found locally in parts of Southern Scandinavia. It is however rare in the UK.

At about 15mm long, it is slightly smaller than the more common green Tiger Beetle.

I found about a dozen of these flying at a high speed in a sandy hollow that was once a sand-pit. They would fly a meter or two to suddenly land and watch out for prey.
The profusion of kidney vetch and patches of wild Thyme made it a fine locality for rare species of Blue butterflies.

This is a typical Tiger beetle with large curved grasping jaws that overlap, large eyes and long legs, which enable it to catch its insect prey. Its colour is a reddish-brown that shines a greenish colour at another light angle, see WORKSHOP.

The larva lives in a tunnel in the sand with its head sticking out. It rushes out to catch the insect prey that happens to be near.

The markings on the elytra and the hair distribution differentiate it from its close relative C. maritima, that was once regarded as a subspecies.

It is only active when the sandy habitat reaches over 28 Celcius, which must have been well over 30 as that was the air temperature.

After spending the winter in the adult stage it flies mainly in May and June with the next generation emerging in July to September.

This shot was taken at a distance of about two meters with my camera hand-held. After moderate cropping and size reduction this was slightly sharpened.

Hi Ivan,

A marvelous macro of this handsome Tiger Beetle. As always the details are picture perfect giving is a very clear view. Wonderful colors and his body markings are beautiful. I loved the workshop - amazing how different the colors were. Interesting to see that jaw you mentioned in your notes. Pardon my ignorance, but is that the head of the larva we see in the WS?

Hello Ivan!

My favourite beetle, king of desert :-) Well taken shot, sharp and clear, with excellent details and typical pose. Maybe slightly too dark. These little tigers are always vigilant and on the move, it is very hard to capture them. Good work! I added your picture to cicindelas' theme

Bonjour Ivan,

hello Ivan

great close-up photos of this insect with 2 fine POVs,
this one to show his shape and the one of the WS
at its level giving impression if we also are insects
and are looking at him, TFS

Hello Ivan. This Beetle is something I'm not familiar in my region. The eye is unique and sharp line along the abdomen is well defined with unique markings. Beautiful diagonal placement in the frame and thanks for sharing.
Kind regards - Jusni
