Hello Friends,
Back after a short vacation of a week with another bird from Weltpark Walsrode in Germany.

The Roseate Spoonbill (Platalea ajaja), sometimes separated in the monotypic genus (Ajaia) is a gregarious wading bird of the ibis and spoonbill family, Threskiornithidae. It is a resident breeder in South America mostly east of the Andes, and in coastal regions of the Caribbean, Central America, Mexico, and the Gulf Coast of the United States.

The Roseate Spoonbill is 80 cm (31 in) tall, with a 120130 cm (4751 in) wingspan. It has long legs, a long neck, and a long, spatulate bill. Adults have a bare greenish head ("golden buff" when breeding) and a white neck, back, and breast (with a tuft of pink feathers in the center when breeding), and are otherwise a deep pink. The bill is grey. Sexes are similar.

Unlike herons, spoonbills fly with their necks outstretched. They alternate groups of stiff, shallow wingbeats with glides.

The Roseate Spoonbill nests in shrubs or trees, often mangroves, laying 2 to 5 eggs, which are whitish with brown markings. Immature birds have white, feathered heads, and the pink of the plumage is paler. The bill is yellowish or pinkish.

There is no information about predation on adults. Nestlings are sometimes killed by Turkey Vultures (which can kill even healthy nestlings), Bald Eagles, Raccoons and Fire Ants. In 2006, a banded bird 16 years old was discovered, making it the oldest known individual in the wild.

This species feeds in shallow fresh or coastal waters by swinging its bill from side to side as it steadily walks through the water, often in groups. It feeds on crustaceans, aquatic beetles and bugs, frogs and newts and very small fish bigger waders ignore. In the United States a popular and easy place to observe Roseate Spoonbills is "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge in Florida. Roseate Spoonbills sometimes feed near Snowy Egrets, Great Egrets, Tricolored Herons, and American White Pelicans.

Hello Peter,
This is a striking photo, not only because of the plumage colours of this Roseate Spoonbill, but because you took this from a fine POV to capture the red eye to result in a nice eye contact while it is preening its plumage.
The sharpness, natural colours and composition contribute to the high quality of this close capture.
Thanks and have a good weekend,

Hi Peter,
Een mooie moment opname van deze kleurrijke vogel. Het geeft echt het idee dat het de vogel niet uitmaakte dat jij er stond. Het detail in de veren heb je super weten vast te leggen en de controle over het licht is echt perfect.

Dear Peter,
Congratulations on a beautiful, interesting photo.

I proves the necessity of Zoos to enable us to study animals, which we would have never seen otherwise!!

Your subject looks a happy, healthy animal utterly engrossed in the preening process.

Do you happen to remember if they were breeding there? I found it always fascinating how animals from warm climates adjust to European winters and overall cold/wet climate!

A great photo of a great bird, and it is truly a pleasure to view this excellent image.

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday
Greetings from South Africa

Hallo Peter
This is an outstanding image, which is proof of superb camera work. The details captured on the plumage are outstanding. Photography on all the detail of the bird including the roughly textured beak, the polka dot red eye and especially the lovely colours in the image as a whole that is brought across so beautifully. It was a pleasure looking and admiring this lovely bird's beauty. My best regards.

Hello Peter,
Interesting picture of a Spoonbill cleaning its plumage. You had a very fine light at disposition which allows to see the different nuances of red and also the superb eye. Sponbills are impressive birds, but we don't have them around here. Special composition too, but it works.
Kind regards
