Waxeye Zosterops lateralis
Moari Name Tauhou Family. Zosteropidae.
Native of New Zealand and South East Australia self introduced to New Zealand in the mid 1880s.
These wee fellows are smaller than a House Sparrow with the female a little bit larger than the male ,not really noticeable they have a bright white ring around the eyes hence the name.
They are distrubuted right through New Zealand from Sea level to the Subalpine Scrub,usually in pairs but do flock in the winter.
Their main source of food is Neactar which is not very plentifull in the winter hence the high mortality rate they will also eat Insects Berries and some fruit.
Breeding is from late August through to late Febuary and have more than one brood.The nest is like a Hammock built of fine grass twigs and spiderwebs the nest is fairly fragile.
They lay 3 or 4 pale blue eggs.
If you have any of these around in the winter put out sme honey or dripping they will come to dinner in larger numbers than you thought were around. |

Nice close up of this bird but not very sharp an image to be considded a good.
