This is a common butterfly up here, the European Peacock, you can see from early spring to late autumn. It wintering as an adult (imago) but in the spring it’s not in special good conditions and the colors are very pale.
When I found this copy it was new born and was really shining in its most beautiful colors.
It’s a rather big butterfly 55-65 mm wing span and it’s known in most parts of Europe bad Asia,

I took this with a 300mm lens and with an 36mm extension tub and of course using my beloved tripod, the macro photographers best friend.

Pattern metering, ISO 400, Raw-format, av-mode.

Hi Gert

I see you are back after deleting all you previous gallery. A pity, there were many superb shots. Thanks for your critique as always. It was not a good season for butterflies or insects and fungi around Sydney, hopefully the comming spring/summer will be an improvement.
This one is a stuinner, brilliant sharpness and the diagonal composition is awesome. Hope to see lots more of your work here again.

best wishes

Dear Gert!

You present us a very beautiful picture of the European Peacock, and the fact that it is a widespread butterfly does not change anything to the value of the picture. The wide open wings allow the viewer to get a fine overall impression and the superb sharpness and clarity reveal great details. The only little regret I have is that the depth of view did not allow to get at least a small part of the flower in focus. But that's personal, and I know that it's sometimes impossible to realize.

Kind regards

Hej Gert,
You're always insisting on honest critiques, so here we go! I don't think this one is up to your normal standard. It is a beautiful butterfly, we have at least 12 of them enjoying our Buddleia at the moment. None of them are as bright red as this one! Strange! The Hemp Agrimony that it rests on is rather dominant and blurred and takes away the focus on the butterfly. It doesn't look that fresh either as a bird or a thorn has already got hold of its wing. The rest is fine!
TFS and have a nice day! Ulla

Hi Gert,
A very nice captured shot of this beautiful European Peacock Butterfly. Very well composed sharp details. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Very nice colors Gert, it's well composed too.
Great plane of focus at F/7.1, fine details..
I might have cheated & cloned in that bite out of the wing,
but that's just me :)
Well done!!

Hello Gert
splendid shot of this European Peacock, remarkable sharp details and a lovely environment, colors, lighting and green BG are just perfect
Have a good night

Hi Gert,
This is simply fantastic! Exposure Perfect! Details perfect! Colors Gorgeous! The composition and the way you framed this one couldn't be better. :)

Saludos: Josep Ignasi.

Hi, Gert.
This species I have never seen in nature. It is really one of the most beautiful. Reproduction of the color pattern, shapes and others are brilliant. Coloration of the BG and surrounding at whole are very nice. I like light color key of shot execution. Well done and kind wishes.
