Levantine Tree Frog is a small and delicate frog, reaching a body length of around 30-45 mm, where females are usually larger than males. Head is flat with a truncate snout. Large eyes possess an elliptical, horizontal pupil. Tympanum is distinct about half of the diameter of the eye. Extremities are rather long, especially hind legs. Fingers and toes are terminated with adhesive disks allowing climbing very easily on vertical surfaces. Fingers show some rudimentary webbing, while toes are ½ to 2/3 webbed. The coloration is very distinctive. Dorsal colour is bright green, sometimes brownish, with a dark, grayish-brown stripe, edged above and below by yellowish lines running from the nostril through the eye and tympanum along the sides of the body to the groin. Ventral coloration is white, with a distinct line of demarcation to dorsal coloration. Skin is smooth to granular. Males can be distinguished easily from females based on their yellowish black vocal sac beneath the chin. Tadpoles are relatively robust, typically very agile, with a quite high upper crest extending forward almost to level of eyes, which are situated on sides of the tadpole's head.

Levantine Tree Frog is distributed in S Turkey, N and W Iran, S Armenia and Azerbajan, Cyprus island, Syria, Jordan, Israel and W Saudi Arabia and Yemen.

Levantine Tree Frog is generally quite similar to H. arborea (European Tree Frog) and its closely related H. orientalis (formerly H. arborea)(Oriental Tree Frog) which found in extremely eastern parts of Europe (e.g. Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova & Ukraine) and western Turkey, but differs from those species in having relatively longer hind legs and no spur-like branch of the dark lateral stripe in the inguinal region. Also, the stripe generally is not continuous. In Hyla arborea and Hyla orientalis, a dark stripe, which begins in front of the eye, extends through the tympanic membrane, and laterally along flanks to the inguinal area, and there forms a spur-like branch anterodorsally.

Levantine Tree Frog is mainly nocturnal, typically vegetation-dwelling amphibian. These frogs spend the daytime hiding in the vegetation near water. Not easy to detect because of its colour changing ability. Feeds on various flying insects and spiders. Goes to water only in the breeding season. Prefers clean and deep waters with much vegetation for breeding. The vocalization of the males is quite strong during the breeding period. Males can be heard calling until August. Typical voice consists of a strident, rapid loud "crak, crak, crak, crak". The walnut sized egg masses are sometimes attached to the vegetation in water, containing 800-1,000 eggs. Breeding season of this species starts in mid December and lasts to mid January, depending on rainfall.

In suitable habitats it occurs in high numbers; however it is locally endangered by water pollution and anthropogenous changes of habitats.

Merhaba MF Prof. Bayram,
such a special pose of this relaxing prince. The colour is so attractive in good use of light.
The clarity and sharpness is splendid. In my country I observed that frogs are on the decline.
What a pity, even the local toads were hard to find.

Selam my dear friend,
A very nice capture of this beautiful Levantine tree frog. Very nice green colors. Excellent sharp details and a nice composition. Thanks a lot for sharing. Have a nice Sunday.

Hello Bayram,
Very beautiful photo of this Levantine Tree Frog in very nice colours. The flash did its work very well. Great clarity and contrast against the BG. The photo is very sharp and full of details. Nice diagonal composition.

Tam dergi kapagi olacak kalitede nefis bir calisma olmus. eline saglik.

Birecik ve Viranşehir'den tanıdık bir yüz. Gül, bazen domates dalları arasında çıkıverirdi. Güneşe maruz kalanlar çikolata rengini alabiliyor. Bütün alttürleri tür yaptılar. Sonumuz hayırlı olsun.:)) Emeğinize sağlık,

Lovely capture, Bayram!

Thanks for the detailed note, especially regarding the differentiation between those related species.

Enjoy the weekend,

Merhaba Bayram,
While following up on your Tree Frog on the Internet, I found a new word for my vocabulary ''twitching'': finding as many Amphibians and Reptile Species and keeping a list... I bet you would win this competition if you cared :-))

The Levantine Green Tree frog is a glorious, colourful jewel-like Frog. Do you happen to know what the jelly -like deposit is, off his leg and on to the tree branch?

I noticed a similar occurrence when I rescued a frog from the heat and put him into water...

Obviously, your Syrian trip was very successful in every sense - and also for TrekNature members - allowing us to enjoy the fruit...

Thank you also for your interesting notes!

Enjoy the rest of your week-end
Warm Wishes

Hello Bayram,
I envy you this lovely capture of a Tree Frog resting on a branch! I expect this is the same species as we found by a swimming pool in Alanya once a long time ago!! We also saw several Tree Frogs on Lesvos but I didn't manage to get a decent shot as it was late in the day! This is a fine composition and I like the close details here and the beautiful light and colours.
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Merhaba Bayram dostum,
great use of flash in this portrayal of the Levantine Tree. One can clearly see the differences between this and other Hyla species thanks to the excellent sharpness, colours and details.
Have nice WE my friend,

Hello my friend!
What a cute tree frog! Fantastic composition and colours. The pose is very nice, I suppose he/she can wait long like this for a prey. I think I would fall asleep in this position.:) Did you remove the mite for analysis (I remember you are parasitologist too.)? Have a nice evening a Sunday,

Merhaba Hocam, söylenecek söz bırakmadınız. Güncel bilgiyle donanmış muhteşem bir sunum olmuş yine.
Emeklerinize sağlık. Saygılarımla,

Hello Bayram,
Exceptional details and perfect focus of this wonderful green frog.
I think it is the best image I have ever seen with this species.
The green colours and the superb details are outstanding.
Perfect focus, contrast and background. I have seen such lovely frogs
in a forest near Timisoara, west side of Romania, but I never have such a good fortune.
Have a nice weekend!

Merhaba Bayram hocam,

nice capture of this Hyla. in parallel, I am quite interested if the new Hyla orientalis described from the Black Sea (Romania, Turkey) is really a different valid taxon...

Bayram hocam çok tatlı pineklemiş zeytin dalı üzerinde.
Onun yerinde olmak vardı. Hehe.. Flaşı çok yerinde ve tadında kullanmışsınız hocam. Hiçbir yerinde aşırı pozlama olmamış.
Emeklerinize sağlık.

Hallo Bayram
Beautiful frog this is. The shape and lovely, bright green colour of its back reminds me of a lime.
Great composition and viewpoint, and I agree with Foozi that it is looks relaxed and the pose is very special. I like the separation of layered colours over the body. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.
