Ixobrychus minutus - Küçük Balaban, Cüce Balaban [TR], Little Bittern [EN] is one of the smallest [perhaphs the smallest] member of the heron family ARDEIDAE (CICONIIFORMES). It is native to the Old World, breeding in Africa, central and southern Europe, western and southern Asia, and Madagascar. Birds from temperate regions in Europe and western Asia are migratory, wintering in Africa and further south in Asia, while those nesting in the tropics are sedentary. It is rare north of its breeding range. This bittern is found as a summer (breeding) visitor in Turkiye, with all parts.
The Little Bittern's breeding habitat is reedbeds. It nests on platforms of reeds in shrubs, and 4-8 eggs are laid. It can be difficult to see, given its skulking lifestyle and reedbed habitat. It feeds on fish, insects and amphibians (from Wikipedia and TRAKUŞ).

I have taken the beautiful bird in many times. But prefer this shot with low POV and coloration. Photograph was taken in Gölbaşı Lake which is the last portion of Late Lake Amik. The lake is also called as the Lake of Antioch (Turkish: Amik Gölü) was a large freshwater lake in the basin of the Asi [Orontes] River in Hatay Province of Turkiye; it was located north-east of Antakya (centre of Hatay prov.). Unfortuntely the lake was drained during a period from the 1940s-1970s.
So it was carried to history since stupid agricultural policy.
Lake Amik was an extremely valuable habitat on the migratory routes of waterfowl and other birds, especially White Storks and pelicans, and was noted for an isolated breeding population of the African Darter. It also supported populations of endemic birds; a possible distinct subspecies of the Black Francolin (Francolinus francolinus billypayni) and the similarly distinct Southern Turkish Bearded Reedling (Panurus biarmicus kosswigi). A Ray-finned fish species Hemigrammocapoeta caudomaculata was only known from Lake Amik, while cyprinid Barbus canis (Tor canis) was found nowhere else in Turkey.
With the draining of the lake, the endemic bird and fish species have become extinct; the region's biodiversity was further harmed by the fact that one of the few similar habitats, Lake Hula in northern Israel, was also drained in the 1950s

Hello Ahmet,
Beautiful photo taken from an excellent low POV and a very good composition. The light on the bird is gorgeous but I don't know what to think about the lighting spots in the BG and FG. Very good sharp details.

Günaydin Ahmet dostum,
I missed this fine capture of Ixobrychus minutus. The low lateral POV is great and it shows so well with fine sharpness and colours against the darker sky BG as it stands on the water lily pads.
Tebrikler ve tesekkürler.
Iyi aksamlar,

Hallo Ahmet,

gratuliere für das wunderschöne Bild von einem relatif seltenen Vogel.
