Willow Warbler - Phylloscopus trochilus

We have plenty of butterflies in the garden now but also masses of black aphids, espcially on an Apple tree. The birds love them and as the aphids feed, they secrete a sticky, honeydew substance that also attracts wasps, ants and sometimes butterflies. This little bird didn't take any notice of me as it was very busy eating the aphids you can see on the twigs and leaves.

"The Willow Warbler is a very common and widespread leaf warbler which breeds throughout northern and temperate Europe and Asia, from Ireland east to the Anadyr River basin in eastern Siberia. It is strongly migratory, with almost all of the population wintering in sub-Saharan Africa.[2][3]
It is a bird of open woodlands with trees and ground cover for nesting, including most importantly birch, alder, and willow habitats. The nest is usually built in close contact with the ground, often in low vegetation. Like most Old World warblers, this small passerine is insectivorous.[3] In northern Europe.”

Hi Ulla,

You've caught a fine moment here. I like the soft natural colors of this bird and the greenish background is beautiful.
Perhaps the autofocus is a bit to much on the leaves but that's not a big problem. TFS!

regards,
Zeno

Hello Ulla,
A very fine-colored Warbler picture. I like the yellow/greenish tints of the shot. You caught the bird in an interesting vivid attitude and made a good decentred composition. I'm just not so sure of what happened to the bird's plumage which seems to be flattened or wiped out on my screen.
Kind regards and have a nice day
Anne

If I were rich, I would pay for a framed copy of a picture such as this. It conveys a message of peace and calm...so very nice Ulla. So very nice..

Amicalement
Laurent

Dear Ulla,
Thank you for this great story of the ''Aphid Eater'' as well as the excellent Notes.

I always find aphids exasperating - they never read the same books as I do e.g. ''Basilicum planted amongst fruit and vegetables stops aphids'' however the aphids in our garden destroyed the Basilicum...

The image of this little Willow Warbler is somehow endearing. The bird looks so fragile!

The downy yellow chest-feathers look quite silky, and the grey-blue edging of the tail feathers adds interest.

The tight control of the depth of field gives your work a dreamy atmosphere.

Have a nice evening
Warm Greetings
Ingrid

Hi Ulla,

Lucky you to have such a beautiful aphid controller in your garden! Beautiful photography, I could almost reach out and touch the soft breast feathers. I have added this one to my favourite photographs.

Warm greetings, Amelia
