The Alpine Marmot (Marmota marmota) is a species of marmot found in mountainous areas of central and southern Europe. Alpine Marmots live at heights between 800 and 3,200 metres, in the Alps, Carpathians, Tatras, the Pyrenees and Northern Apennines Italy. They were reintroduced with success in the Pyrenees in 1948, where the Alpine Marmot had disappeared at end of the Pleistocene epoch. They are excellent diggers, able to penetrate soil that even a pickaxe would have difficulty with, and spend up to nine months per year in hibernation.[3] An adult Alpine Marmot may weigh between 4 and 8 kg and reach between 4254 cm in length (not including the tail, which measures between 1316 cm on average). This makes the Alpine Marmot the largest squirrel species.
Alpine Marmots eat plants such as grasses and herbs, as well as grain, insects, spiders and worms. They prefer young and tender plants over any other kind, and hold food in their forepaws while eating. They mainly emerge from their burrows to engage in feeding during the morning and afternoon, as they are not well suited to heat, which may result in them not feeding at all on very warm days. When the weather is suitable, they will consume large amounts of food in order to create a layer of fat on their body, enabling them to survive their long hibernation period.

Hello Mircea,
A superb close capture of an Alpine Marmot.
The pose on the licken-covered rock, POV, sharpness colours and lighting are great and though it takes up most of the picture the BG shows a little of the natural habitat too.
Thanks and have a good week,
Ivan

Hello Mircea,
Not easy at all to take a picture of an alpine Marmot in the wild! I have seen a family this summer, but no possibilty to take a picture. You caught it in a good pose from behind, I suppose it was just looking at you and disappeared afterwards.
Kind regards
Anne

Dear Mircea
An interesting photo with equally interesting Notes!

I am very pleased indeed to see the back of the Marmot, thank you. I do not know much about them except that they love voices (soft talk). I once sat on front of a rock in the Swiss mountains - where I had noticed the eyes and ears of a Marmot - and when I talked to the animal - it sat there for ages, only the ears moving...

I also like VERY much the lichen, none in the area where I live now, due to the VERY dry climate!

I wish you a pleasant week,
Greetings
Ingrid

Hello Mircea,
A fine capture of this marmot in natural looking surroundings. Both my wife and I have a soft spot for marmots and love watching them. Your image is technically splendid. TFS Mircea.

Salut Mircea
Toate cele bune
Oana
