Pale Tussock - Calliteara pudibunda

While searching for mushrooms in a Beech forest earlier today, I bumped into this colourful and furry caterpillar with a red tail. It was moving about in the moss on a tree stump. I’ve never seen it before but have now found out that it is the caterpillar of the Pale Tussock that is a moth with a wingspan of 35-47 mm (male) and 46-62 mm (female). Its colours are greyish with beautiful wing markings. In Sweden it flies from April to June.

The eggs are laid in batches in June and the larvae feed from July until about now on Beech and other deciduous trees. When ready to pupate it falls to the ground and that’s how I found it! When I disturbed it it curled up into a little ball (see WORKSHOP).

The Pale Tussock is widespread in central and northern Europe.

I don’t know what poison this caterpillar injected in my Canon G9, but it packed up completely after I took these shots! I hope it can be repaired as I love this handy little camera!

Merhaba Ulla,

Hi Ulla.
I have not seen anything similar. What a cute creature. Especially I like surroundings. They decorate all image very well. However, the most impressive thing is terrific reproduction of all features of caterpillar. Colours and lights are also great. Bravo. Precise work.

Hello Ulla,
This is a very cute caterpillar, but it has really the look of a poisonous creature. So take care with these little things! Beautiful how it is posed on the mossy soil. Very funny this littel brush.
Thanks and have a nice week
Kind regards
Anne

Hi Ulla. I like this angle making the beautiful yellow catepillar looking like a bottle brush on top of the evergreen. Amazing details in well rendered natural tone. Your uploads inspired me to explore more of the little G. Please allow me to add this image to my personal Theme. Thanks for sharing and have a good day shooting ahead. Regards - Jusni.

Ho Ulla,
