In last July, I visited Ovit Mountain Pass between Rize and Erzurum provinces after July of 2009. It was sunny, but very windy. I saw several Clouded Apollo. Either they or other butterflies flew without almost roosting. Only once, I captured one of them on flower for a short moment. As I remember, I was in a distance of about 10m. Therefore, the shot was taken by Canon 600 f/4 supertele lens..

Parnassius (Driopa) mnemosyne - Dumanlı Apollo [TR], Clouded Apollo, Clouded Parnassius [EN] is one of three species of the genus Apollo (LEPIDOPTERA: PAPILIONIDAE) in Turkiye, with;
*** Parnassius apollo - Apollo Kelebeği, Apollo, Mountain Apollo (photo 1, photo 2)
*** Parnassius (Driopa) nordmanni - Kafkas Apollosu, Caucasian Apollo

Distribution: P. mnemosyne ranges in almost all Europe, Turkiye, Iran, and Afghanistan, West of Siberia and the Middle East. In Turkiye, it is found in most of the country with several subspecies:
...- P. mnemosyne nubilosus: Bingöl, Bitlis, Hakkari, Iğdır, Kars, Muş, Şırnak, Tunceli, Van
...- P. mnemosyne sheljuzhkoi: Adana, Antalya, Gaziantep, Hatay, Isparta, İzmir, Konya, K.Maraş, Mersin, Muğla, Niğde
...- P. mnemosyne caucasia : Amasya, Ankara, Ardahan, Artvin, Bayburt, Bolu, Bursa, Çankırı, Erzincan, Erzurum, Eskişehir, Gümüşhane, Kastamonu, Kırklareli, Ordu, Rize, Sivas, Tokat, Yozgat, Zonguldak.
Habitat: It vertically ranges up to 3000 m a.s.l. It is sometimes found in more altitudes.
Food Plant: The caterpillars feed on plants of the genus Corydalis (Kazgagası) (PAPAVERALES: FUMARIACEAE).
The flowers on this post belonged to the genus Primula. I posted Primula elatior meyeri, taken in my previous visiting (in 2009) to same locality. I am not sure about species or subspecies of this Primula, looking a bit different

What a great result with your 600mm lens!
You must have been several meters from this Parnassius mnemosyne to take such a shot. The sharpness, colours, contrasting BG and composition are great too.
Your note in English is informative and much appreciated, especially the ssp and the various localities.
Well done my friend.
Tesekkürler ve eline saglik,

It leaves me awe-struck when I see such a flawless picture shot at shutter speed 1/4000, Dr Ahmet. I can't figure out how you perform this magic.
The Apollo on those pink flowers looks absolutely divine and the dark green BG without a speck of noise on it supports the main subject beautifully.
Hat off to you and thanks a lot for sharing this image.

Dear Ahmet!

The almost centered composition suits the subject and especially the very vertical point of view very well. The quite dark exposure and the fact that the background is almost uniform creates a strange yet pleasant impact. It's a particular image that I like very much.

Kind regards

Merhaba Ahmet hocam,

Diğer Apollo türlerine kıyasla sade bir güzelliğe sahip.
Koyu yeşil arka fon ve üzerine konduğu çiçeğin güzelliği kompozisyona zenginlik katmış.
Elinize ve emeğinize sağlık.

Selam ve saygılarımla,

sahra obüsüyle iyi atış. Eline sağlık.

A finely managed tele-macro study made more spectacular by the inclusion of those lovely purplish flowers Ahmet, and the darkish BG draws the attention to the b.fly and flowers forcefully. Good job my friend!

Hello Ahmet,
To see and to be able to photograph a species of Parnassius is always a gift from nature. And your butterfly had even chosen a lovely flower to rest! Pleasant and interesting posting. Thanks for it.
Kind regards

Merhaba Ahmet bey,
Wonderful photo again hocam - this time a macro with telelens... Unbelievable, and the result's breathtaking. Marvellous contrast, sharpness, and the whole pic is quite pleasant to look at eventhough the colors of the primula seems a bit oversaturated. Excellent informative note also. Tfs your great work.
Friendly regards, László

Türde Fotoğrafıda harika olmuş. Çok kıskandım bu fotoğrafı .:) Ellerinize sağlık. Selamlar Hocam.

Salam my friend Ahmet. I have never seen this beautiful butterfly before. I don't think we have close cousins of this species here and this is an excellent capture from dorsal pov.
Stunning details with splendid colors.
