The Local Zoo can be often an ideal field for practising your photography. As long as the image does not have traces of enclosures or cages the result can be satisfying and will meet the requirements of this website as well. In many cases this is the only chance to stand face to face with exotic creatures an take some memorable photographs.

Macaw Psittacidae

Fast Facts

Type: Bird
Diet: Omnivore
Average life span in the wild: Up to 60 years
Size: 11.8 to 39.5 in (30 to 100 cm)
Weight: 4.5 oz to 3.75 lbs (129 to 1,695 g)
Group name: Flock
Did you know? The hyacinth macaw—the largest of all parrots—has an enormous wingspan of more than 4 ft (127 cm).

Macaws are beautiful, brilliantly colored members of the parrot family.

Many macaws have vibrant plumage. The coloring is suited to life in Central and South American rain forests, with their green canopies and colorful fruits and flowers. The birds boast large, powerful beaks that easily crack nuts and seeds, while their dry, scaly tongues have a bone inside them that makes them an effective tool for tapping into fruits.

Macaws also have gripping toes that they use to latch onto branches and to grab, hold, and examine items. The birds sport graceful tails that are typically very long.

Macaws are intelligent, social birds that often gather in flocks of 10 to 30 individuals. Their loud calls, squawks, and screams echo through the forest canopy. Macaws vocalize to communicate within the flock, mark territory, and identify one another. Some species can even mimic human speech.

Flocks sleep in the trees at night, and in the morning they may fly long distances to feed on fruit, nuts, insects, and snails. Some species also eat damp soil, which may help to neutralize chemicals in their fruity diet and ease their stomachs.

Macaws typically mate for life. They not only breed with, but also share food with their mates and enjoy mutual grooming. In breeding season, mothers incubate eggs while fathers hunt and bring food back to the nest.

There are 17 species of macaws, and several are endangered. These playful birds are popular pets, and many are illegally trapped for that trade. The rain forest homes of many species are also disappearing at an alarming rate.

Hyacinth, red-fronted, and blue-throated macaws are seriously endangered. The glaucus macaw and Spix's macaw may already be extinct in the wild.

The image was taken in RAW, ISO100 using Evaluative metering system.

Well presented view.

Hello George,
This is simply professional! (not professorial, ok) ... I'm impressed by the sharpness of the picture, it really is "absolute." Nothing to say about the colors and light given to them, is really a picture visually eloquent. Good work friend George! ... These macaws appear to be "gossip" ... ha .. ha .. :) that adds dynamism to the photo!

When I was a kid I saw several species of macaws in visits our central plains (Cojedes and Portuguesa states), but today, these birds (as says your note) are extremely low populations, and is easier buy them as pets to see a in the wild. A shame!

Regards, TFS

Hallo George,
this is a fine picture of these colorful birds.
Even if it's taken in a zoo it's nice and I'm glad you mention it, many doesn't border to do so.
I'm surprised you got this pretty deep DOF with the aperture 2,8.
The picture is sharped and with nice colors.
Well done, mf.

Regards
Gert

Wether you took this in the Zoo or the Loo,it does'nt matter. A good shot is a good shot and you did well here.
I can understand the tight crop and tails chopped in this one as the focus is on detail and color. Well timed, I am sure people with enough initiative can think of a few captions to go with this one.

Greetings
Frans.

Hello George,
A photo in wonderful bright colours and pleasing poses of these macaws. Excellent sharpness and details. Good DOF and OOF BG.
I was lucky to see these macaws in the wild in the Panatanal in Brazil. We did some small research to the nesting of the rare Hyacinth Macaws.
Regards,
Peter

Hello George,
Zoo or not this is an incredibly beautiful image. The detail is as fine as I've seen, and the colors are simply gorgeous. I like their facial expressions as the red one seems to be quietly whispering into his buddies ear, while the far right one has a very shy expression. Well done!!
