Leopard tortoise - Geochelone pardalis

This was also taken in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.
The leopard tortoise is ons of the so calles "small five", the other being the elephant shrew, the red billed buffalo weaver, the ant lion and the rhino beetle

The leopard tortoise is one of the largest tortoise species in the world. It is at times also referred to as the African leopard tortoise, owing to its geographical range, which spans from Sudan to southern Cape in the continent of Africa. It is one of the most popular species when it comes to keeping tortoises as pets, and therefore breeding leopard tortoises has become a full fledged commercial activity in various parts of the world.

P. s.: You should change the "categories" item from "mammals" to "reptiles"...

Hallo Peter
This is a beautiful capture of a Leopard tortoise showing lovely details of its patterned shell, the scales on its paws and its eyes and nose. We often look at the Sanparks webcams when we have a few minutes spare and ever so often we see a huge tortoise like this one at the Addo webcam. Thanks for sharing. You have really spoilt us lately with some unique images. Best regards.
Anna

Well done Peter. I saw lots of them in the Addo Elephant Park earlier this year and they are big.

Wow Peter ! Nice shot taken from a ground level! I have witness few years ago this majestic tortoise walking proudly on the road between the Karoo and Cape Town! Fine capture and wonderful edition to TN!
